The Assistant Accountant / Accounts Payable Officer provides essential financial support to the Finance Team at North Canberra Hospital. This role involves assisting with the preparation of journals, account reconciliations, and end-of-month reporting, while ensuring accuracy and compliance with accounting standards. The position also supports accounts payable functions, general ledger maintenance, and financial reporting, contributing to the smooth operation of the hospital’s finance activities. The successful candidate will work both independently and collaboratively, liaising with internal and external stakeholders to deliver timely and high-quality financial services.

Key responsibilities

The Assistant Accountant/Accounts Payable Officer duties include:

  1. Perform the following monthly accounting duties for the North Canberra Hospital:
    1. Assist in preparation of month end journals and accounts.
    2. Prepare reconciliations.
    3. Assist in preparation of reports to internal and external stakeholders;
    4. Provide analysis of data and interpret accounts as requested;
  2. Provide monthly reports on Special Purpose Trust Fund accounts;
  3. Maintenance and administration function of accounting systems including APIAS, Oracle and PBRC;
  4. Assist and support the Business Managers with reporting and budgets as required;
  5. Receive and redirect invoices to certifying and approving officers.
  6. Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organization.

Competencies

  • Enter invoices to the Accounts systems (APIAS and Oracle).
  • Attend to vendor enquiries.
  • Other relevant duties as requested within the Finance and Accounts Team.

Qualifications

Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to the following.

Desirable

  • Degree or working towards a degree in Commerce, Accounting or Business majoring in accounting preferred
  • Working towards membership of institute of Chartered Accountants or CPA Australia desirable

Experience

Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to the following.

Essential

  • Prior work experience in the ACT Government environment, including the preparation of journals, assisting with month end processes and balance sheet reconciliations.
  • Demonstrated high level oral and written communications and analytical skills.
  • Strong prior experience with Excel skills including data manipulation functions.
  • Have an understanding of how the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) indicators align with this role.
  • Fulfil the responsibilities of this role in alignment to the CHS Exceptional Care Framework and all other related frameworks.

Desirable

Prior to commencement

  • Undergo a pre-employment National Police Check.
