Position Overview

The Nursing and Midwifery branch is the professional lead for nursing and midwifery on the North Canberra Hospital (NCH). It provides service delivery of the Patient Support Services (PSS), Patient Flow Unit, Clinical Learning and Development, and Nursing and Midwifery professional functions.

Under the limited direction of the Director of Patient Flow you will be responsible for the day-to-day management of Patient Support Services. This includes:

  • Clinical Support Officers (ward support).
  • Staff Allocation Officers.
  • Ward Service Officers (general and surgical wards and operating theatres).
  • Mortuary.
  • Switchboard operators.
  • Mailroom officer.
  • Accommodation officer.

As a senior leader within PSS, this role requires a person who can inspire, energise, and positively influence team and individual outcomes. The role is responsible for supervising, management, and motivating a team to provide exceptional healthcare and support to clinicians, patients, and their families at NCH.

Key responsibilities

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.

The Director of Patient Support Services is responsible for the overall management and strategic leadership of the Patient Support Services functions which include Ward Clerks, Wardspersons, Switchboard, Mailroom and Mortuary Services across the Canberra Hospital and Health Services portfolio by:

  1. Directing and managing the operational activities of the Patient Support Services section and its subsidiary functions.
  2. Ensuring the most efficient and effective use of service's resources by developing and effectively managing budgets, resources and expenditure.
  3. Ensuring policies and standard operating procedures are in place for the efficient, effective and safe management for the provision of services.
  4. Developing effective and timely communication strategies to ensure both Hospital management and staff are kept informed of any operational demands/changes.
  5. Developing workforce and operational strategies to prepare the service to meet the increasing demands of the expanding needs of the Hospital.
  6. Overseeing the development of staff training schemes, ensuring that an appropriate orientation and ongoing training program for staff is developed, maintained and reviewed annually.
  7. Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

Position Requirements / Qualifications

Desirable

  • Experience leading large teams of employees.
  • Experience working in a healthcare setting.
  • Relevant territory qualifications and experience in business administration or human resources.
  • Have an understanding of how the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) indicators align with this role.
  • Fulfil the responsibilities of this role in alignment to the CHS Exceptional Care Framework and all other related frameworks.
  • CHS is leading the drive to digitally transform health service delivery in Australia through the implementation of a territory wide Digital Health Record. Computer literacy skills are required which are relevant to this role as you will be responsible for completing required documentation and becoming a proficient user of the Digital Health Record and/or other Information Technology systems; once proficient, you will need to remain current with changes, updates and contingencies.

  1. Proven experience in managing and achieving outcomes within a complex and diverse hospital environment.
  2. Demonstrated high level competence in the strategic leadership and management of a large multi-faceted workforce in the achievement of health services management, including an understanding of the complexities and difficulties associated with the provision of a 24-hour, 7 day a week service.
  3. Proven ability to work both operationally and strategically across different disciplines and within corporate requirements for policy development and implementation, financial management and people management.
  4. Demonstrated competence in the development of a customer-focused culture and productive work relationships using personal drive and outstanding communication skills.
  5. Demonstrates understanding of, and adherence to, safety and quality standards, Work Health and Safety and the positive patient experience. Displays behaviour consistent with CHS’s values of reliable, progressive, respectful, and kind.
