Applications are sought for the 2027 clinical year for a period of one year with possible extension. To be eligible to apply for this position you must be PGY3+ from February 2027.

Canberra Health Services recruits Senior Resident Medical Officers (SRMO) to the ACT Network which includes Canberra Hospital, North Canberra Hospital, University of Canberra Hospital, Goulburn Base Hospital, Moruya Hospital, Cooma Hospital and South-East Regional Hospital (Bega). All SRMOs may be allocated rotations within the ACT Network.

The ACT operates a four-term clinical year. Over the course of a year, the role will consist of two-terms in a service / relief role and two-rotations in an area of your individual preference. The successful applicant will be able to provide preferences for the non-service rotation during the interview process, and these will be assigned on a merit basis.

Key responsibilities

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Provide competent and efficient clinical management of patients of Canberra Health Services under the supervision and direction of a consultant supervisor. Clinical duties will include assessment and management of acute presentations, inpatient care, diagnosis and management of patients in outpatient clinics, consultations, and attending and actively participating in clinical handover.
  • Participate in the supervision, training and professional development of junior medical staff, allied health professionals and medical students.
  • Be prepared to work at either Canberra Hospital, University of Canberra Hospital and/or North Canberra Hospital in the capacity of a senior resident medical officer (SRMO), as required by the rostering team.
  • Demonstrate commitment to training and continuing professional development including participation in relevant teaching programs, activities, and feedback opportunities, involvement in research, and teaching of junior medical staff and/or medical students
  • Participate in the 24/7 rosters, including evening, overnight, weekend shifts and on-call commitments as required and according to changing organisational needs.
  • Comply with the policies and requirements of the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (Ahpra) and the policies of the Health Directorate.
  • Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Must have an Australian MBBS medical degree or equivalent, completed in the last five years.
  • Registered or eligible for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (Ahpra).
  • Current Basic Life Support skills as a minimum, and Advanced Life Support skills where required.
  • Postgraduate year three, or above, and previous experience or training in a hospital-based training program.

Please note prior to commencement, successful candidates will be required to:

  • Undergo a pre-employment National Police Check.
  • Comply with Canberra Health Services Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination policy.

CHS is leading the drive to digitally transform health service delivery in Australia through the implementation of a territory wide Digital Health Record. Computer literacy skills are required which are relevant to this role as you will be responsible for completing required documentation and becoming a proficient user of the Digital Health Record and/or other Information Technology systems; once proficient, you will need to remain current with changes, updates, and contingencies.

  1. Proven clinical competence at a level commensurate with the number of years since graduation in medicine.
  2. Demonstrated ability to pursue both formal and self-directed learning in clinical practice, and some evidence of developing ability to teach more junior doctors and medical students.
  3. Proven ability to work collaboratively in a clinical team and, to participate in the after-hour’s roster.
  4. Demonstrated high level of written and verbal interpersonal and communication skills.
  5. Demonstrates understanding of, and adherence to, safety and quality standards, Work Health and Safety and the positive patient experience. Displays behaviour consistent with CHS’s values of reliable, progressive, respectful, and kind.
