Applications are sought for the 2026 clinical year, offered a two-year contract with possible extension. To be eligible for this role, you must be PGY2+ from February 2026.
CHS recruits Resident Medical Officers (RMOs) to the ACT Network which includes the following sites:
- Canberra Hospital, Garran ACT
- North Canberra Hospital, Bruce ACT
- University of Canberra Hospital, Belconnen ACT
- Alexander Maconochie Centre, Hume ACT
- Goulburn Base Hospital, Goulburn NSW
- Moruya Hospital, Moruya NSW
- Cooma Hospital, Cooma NSW
- South-East Regional Hospital, Bega NSW
- Sapphire Coast Medical Practice, Bega NSW
Key responsibilities
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Provide day-to-day medical care for patients of the Canberra Health Services Directorate at a level commensurate with the level of clinical experience and under the supervision and direction of more senior medical staff.
- Demonstrate appropriate progression toward more independent medical practice, with concomitant development of clinical knowledge, skills and behaviours required for safe medical practice.
- Work within and support the multidisciplinary clinical team.
- Contribute to clinical audit and participate in changes that improve quality and safety of patient care.
- Participate in the supervision and education of more junior medical staff and contribute to the education of medical students.
- Maintain adequate medical records with legible entries, and complete discharge summaries on time.
- Participate in the after-hours roster as required and in accordance with current safe working hours provisions.
- Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

Qualifications
Essential
- An Australian MBBS medical degree or equivalent.
- Registered or eligible for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (Ahpra).
- Successful completion of an accredited internship
- Current Basic Life Support skills as a minimum, and Advanced Life Support skills where required.
- Proficient computer literacy skills, as you will be responsible for completing clinical documentation in the DHR and using other CHS IT systems
- A minimum of one-year clinical experience
Desirable
- Have an understanding of how the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) indicators align with this role.
- Fulfil the responsibilities of this role in alignment to the CHS Exceptional Care Framework, Clinical Governance Framework, Partnering for Exceptional Care Framework and all other related frameworks.

- Undergo a pre-employment National Police Check.
- Comply with Canberra Health Services Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination policy.

CHS is leading the drive to digitally transform health service delivery in Australia through the implementation of a territory wide Digital Health Record. Computer literacy skills are required which are relevant to this role as you will be responsible for completing required documentation and becoming a proficient user of the Digital Health Record and/or other Information Technology systems; once proficient, you will need to remain current with changes, updates, and contingencies.

- Proven clinical competence at a level commensurate with the number of years since graduation in medicine.
- Demonstrated ability to pursue both formal and self-directed learning in clinical practice, and some evidence of developing ability to teach more junior doctors and medical students.
- Proven ability to work collaboratively in a clinical team and, to participate in the after-hours roster.
- Demonstrated high level of written and verbal interpersonal and communication skills.
- Demonstrates understanding of, and adherence to, safety and quality standards, Work Health and Safety and the positive patient experience. Displays behaviour consistent with CHS’s values of reliable, progressive, respectful, and kind.
