Applications are sought for the 2027 clinical year, from February 2027 for a period of 12 months with possible extension.  To be eligible to apply for this position applicants must be PGY4+ by February 2027.

The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS) at Canberra Health Services is a busy service supported by junior medical officers, two accredited registrar positions and a team of specialist surgeons. Under the supervision of the specialist surgeons, this position will support the unit to provide on-call services, both elective and non-elective surgery, outpatient clinics, emergency department reviews and inpatient care, as well as day-to-day activities as required and appropriate.

An initial contract will be issued for a one‑year period, with further employment subject to relevant training requirements and progression.

Key responsibilities

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Provide competent and efficient clinical management of patients of Canberra Health Services under the supervision and direction of (a) Consultant Medical Practitioner(s). The clinical management includes acute admissions, in-patient care, outpatient clinics, inter -disciplinary consults and clinical handover
  • Participate in the supervision, training and professional development of junior medical staff and work within and support the multidisciplinary clinical team
  • Demonstrate progress in training in the specialty in basic Oral and Maxillofacial surgery and participation in the relevant teaching program and activities, timely completion of assessments and involvement in research
  • Currency in an Advanced Life Support Course to be attained within three months of commencement with annual refreshers
  • Demonstrate commitment to training and continuing professional development including participation in relevant teaching programs, activities, and feedback opportunities, involvement in research, and teaching of junior medical staff and/or medical students.
  • Participate in the after-hours and on-call roster for The Canberra & Calvary Hospitals
  • Contribute to clinical audit and participate in changes that improve quality and safety of patient care
  • Maintain adequate and legible medical records and ensure that the clinical team completes discharge summaries in a timely manner
  • Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Must have an Australian MBBS medical degree or equivalent
  • Must have Australian Dental Degree
  • Registered or eligible for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (Ahpra) in both medicine and dentistry
  • Currency in an Advanced Life Support Course to be attained within three months of commencement with annual refreshers.
  • Has completed the equivalent of at least three years of relevant full time clinical experience
