Applications are sought to commence August 2026 for a period of one year with possible extension. To be eligible for this position, applicants need to be PGY4+ at the time of commencement.

This position is available for registrars, interested in pursuing neurology. Applicants who receive appropriate approval/acceptance into the neurology training program, can submit an application to ANZAN/RACP to accredit this position as non-core year towards your training.

The successful candidate will contribute to the neurology service by undertaking care of patients under the supervision of the neurologists in the department. The year will structured to involve rotations throughout patient clinics, ward responsibilities as well as neurology and stroke consultations. It is envisaged that during the out-patient clinic rotation, there will be three to five clinics per week. In addition, the successful candidate will contribute to the out-of-hours on-call roster for neurology and stroke.

Along with the clinical duties, there are regular educational events and clinical meetings in which the registrar will be expected to participate.

Key responsibilities

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Participate in outpatient clinics under the supervision of consultant neurologists to provide a referral service for GPs and other medical practitioners and provide appropriate continuity of care for discharged patients.
  • Participate in after-hours neurology/ stroke on-call roster under consultant supervision.
  • Liaise with all members of the clinical team to maximise patient care and outcome.  Promote high quality, customer service principles, practices and attributes.
  • Contribute to the education and training of all members of the clinical team. Regularly attend relevant departmental and interdepartmental meetings. Contribute to the clinical governance of the Unit by undertaking clinical audit, morbidity and mortality review and practising evidence-based medicine.
  • Actively participate in the training of both junior medical staff and medical students. Contribute to the teaching program of the ANU Medical School under the broad direction of the Head of Department in association with the Dean or delegate.
  • Demonstrate commitment to training and continuing professional development including participation in relevant teaching programs, activities, and feedback opportunities, involvement in research, and teaching of junior medical staff and/or medical students.
  • Undertake research in areas of medical interest related to the clinical practice or science of neurology.
  • Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation

Qualifications

Essential

  • MBBS or equivalent
  • Registered or eligible for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (Ahpra).
  • Previous experience or training in a hospital-based internal medicine training program and/or neurology training program
  • Have completed at least three years of relevant full time clinical experience

Computer literacy skills are required which are relevant to this role as you will be responsible for completing required documentation and becoming a proficient user of the Digital Health Record and/or other Information Technology systems; once proficient, you will need to remain current with changes, updates, and contingencies.

  1. Experience in the practice of general medicine, preferably in neurology and completed basic physician training.
  2. Sound knowledge of evidence-based medical practice in Neurology.
  3. High-level communication and interpersonal skills with a strong commitment to teaching at all levels (including medical, nursing and allied health professional staff).
  4. An active interest in conducting research in a relevant area of clinical operational or scientific practice.
  5. Demonstrates understanding of, and adherence to, safety and quality standards, Work Health and Safety and the positive patient experience. Displays behaviour consistent with CHS’s values of reliable, progressive, respectful, and kind.
