Canberra Health Services (CHS) is focussed on the delivery of high quality, effective, person-centred care. We provide acute, sub-acute, primary and community‐based health services, to the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) and surrounding regions. More information can be found on the CHS website.
Applications are sought for the 2027 Intern Training Program commencing in January 2027. Internship at CHS commences earlier than other jurisdictions to allow delivery of a comprehensive orientation program.
The 2027 clinical year will commence on 1 February 2027.
Canberra Health Services network, includes rotations across Canberra and surrounding regional NSW. In addition, as a major tertiary referral centre, with a recently purpose built critical clinical services building. Areas of Canberra Health services such as ACT Pathology, Mental Health ACT, Capital Regional Cancer Service, Rehabilitation and Aged Care Services and Obstetrics and Gynecology are all teaching facilities for the Australian National University.
Positions are available for Postgraduate Year 1 (Interns/PGY1s). Applicants must be eligible for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (Ahpra). Successful candidates are offered a 2-year contract.

Key responsibilities
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Provide day-to-day medical care for patients of Canberra Health Services (or secondment location) at a level commensurate with the level of clinical experience and under the supervision and direction of more senior medical staff.
- Undertake appropriate progression toward more independent medical practice with concomitant development of clinical knowledge, skills and behaviors required for safe medical practice.
- Attendance at scheduled JMO teaching sessions and contribute to the education of medical students and other health care staff.
- Contribute to clinical audit and participate in changes that improve quality and safety of patient care.
- Maintain adequate medical records with legible entries, and complete discharge summaries on time.
- Participate in the after-hours roster, including evenings, night, weekend and public holiday shifts, in accordance with current safe working hour’s provisions.
- Work within and support the multidisciplinary clinical team.
- Undertaking other duties as directed, within the approved scope of clinical practice.

Qualifications
Essential
- An Australian MBBS medical degree or equivalent, completed within the previous five years
- Registered or eligible for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (Ahpra).
- Current Basic Life Support skills as a minimum, and Advanced Life Support skills where required.
- Proficient computer literacy skills, as you will be responsible for completing clinical documentation in the DHR and using other CHS IT systems
- International applicants must be able to meet the Ahpra English language and recency of practice standard Medical Board of Australia - Registration Standards at time of application
Desirable
- Have an understanding of how the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) indicators align with this role.
- Fulfil the responsibilities of this role in alignment to the CHS Exceptional Care Framework, Clinical Governance Framework, Partnering for Exceptional Care Framework and all other related frameworks.

- Undergo a pre-employment National Police Check.

CHS is leading the drive to digitally transform health service delivery in Australia through the implementation of a territory wide Digital Health Record. Computer literacy skills are required which are relevant to this role as you will be responsible for completing required documentation and becoming a proficient user of the Digital Health Record and/or other Information Technology systems; once proficient, you will need to remain current with changes, updates, and contingencies.
