To be eligible to apply for this position you must be PGY4+. This position is a full time position commencing 1 February 2027 for 12 months with possible extension.

North Canberra Hospital (formerly Calvary Public Hospital Bruce) and Clare Holland House are now run and operated by Canberra Health Services (CHS). This is a significant milestone as the ACT Government is moving towards delivering a new hospital on Canberra’s Northside.

The new Northside Hospital will be built on the existing North Canberra Hospital (NCH) campus in Bruce. It will be a modern, state-of-the-art hospital for patients, visitors and its workforce and will provide more beds and increased services. Until then, it's business as usual at NCH, and we'll keep providing high-quality care to our patients and community.

HITH NCH is a multidisciplinary inpatient unit providing acute medical care for patients in their own homes.   It is a progressive unit known for its multidisciplinary approach and will give trainees exposure to a rapidly expanding service model for inpatients with acute illnesses, not requiring treatment based in a hospital ward. Whether you are interested in general medicine, general practice, emergency medicine, geriatric medicine or infectious diseases, this position provides excellent broad experience in acute medicine and management of chronic comorbidities.

As an unaccredited registrar, you will work as part of the HITH multi-disciplinary team assisting consultants with clinical management of patients, applying medical knowledge and experience in the clinical diagnosis, investigation, treatment, ongoing management and appropriate discharge of patients.

Key responsibilities

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Assess patients for admission or transfer to the HITH unit with respect to both their clinical and psychosocial capacity to be safely admitted to HITH.
• Assess acutely deteriorating patients in the ZMC day infusions service and provide management as required in consultation with their admitting specialist and/or MET team if required.
• Provide clinical support for all staff members of the HITH Service including, but not limited to, junior medical officers and nursing staff.
• Maintain effective communication with patients and their relatives, hospital staff, medical colleagues, general practitioners and other community care providers to ensure the best provision of care and education.
• Ensure medical records are appropriately updated and with the HITH senior medical staff ensure cost-effective use and wise stewardship of hospital resources.
• Contribute to quality assurance and/or research activities within the unit to fulfill training requirements.
• Holistically manage patient’s primary condition as well as other co-morbidities which may be affected during their illness.
• Identify discharge goals and timelines for patients admitted to the HITH service.
• Ensure discharge communication, supports and processes are in place for safe discharge of patients back to their GP and community services from HITH.
• Participate in HITH multidisciplinary handover and meetings on a twice daily basis.
• Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

Qualifications

Essential

• Hold an Australian MBBS medical degree or equivalent.
• Be registered or be eligible for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (Ahpra).

Desirable

• Have an understanding of how the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) indicators align with this role.

Experience

Essential

• Have completed the equivalent of at least three years of relevant full time clinical experience.
• Ability to meet recency of practice requirements with Ahpra.

Desirable

• Experience or knowledge of the CHS Exceptional Care Framework, and all other related frameworks.

CHS is leading the drive to digitally transform health service delivery in Australia through the implementation of a territory wide Digital Health Record. Computer literacy skills are required which are relevant to this role as you will be responsible for completing required documentation and becoming a proficient user of the Digital Health Record and/or other Information Technology systems; once proficient, you will need to remain current with changes, updates, and contingencies.
