Position overview
To be eligible to apply for this position you must be PGY7+. This position is a full-time position, commencing 1 February 2027 for 12 months with possible extension.
The ACT Physician Training Network encompasses the Canberra Hospital Woden Campus, North Canberra Hospital, Goulburn Base Hospital and Southeastern Regional Hospital (Bega).
We have over 73 Basic Physician Trainees (BPTs) and over 40 Advanced Trainees in all medical specialties. The Physician Training office is led by the Network Director of Physician Education (NDPE) and supported by a Medical Education Support Officer (MESO).
The Senior Medical Registrars (SMRs) are important leadership positions in CHS network and will work alongside the campus Directors of Physician Education (DPE) and Medical Education Support Officer (MESOs) to deliver a high-quality physician education and training program in line with the RACP curriculum.
The SMRs will represent junior medical staff by acting as representatives on committees such as the ACT Network Physician Training Committee. The SMRs will assist with BPT recruitment, term allocations and rostering.
The roles will be split into an administrative/educational component (0.5FTE) and clinical component (0.5FTE). At this stage, 12 months of SMR position is accredited with the RACP general and acute care medicine advanced training for six months of core gen-med related rotation and six-month core subspecialty rotation (in infectious diseases or respiratory medicine).There will be also opportunities for undertaking research and teaching at the ANU Medical School.
The position would most suit an advanced trainee in general medicine at any level but a senior trainee in another discipline aiming to acquire more expertise in medical education would also be highly regarded.
Key responsibilities
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Work with the DPE in recruitment and provision of support for BPTs both in their service roles and in pursuing their educational objectives
- Attend and contribute to Medical Morning Handover
- Represent physician trainees on various Committees including the Physician Training Committee
- Assist implementation of the physician training education and training program that includes:
- Organising the RACP Clinical Examination at North Canberra Hospital with the Regional Examiner
- Coordinating the tutorial program for the RACP Written Examination
- Preparing local trainees for the RACP Clinical Examination
- Assist with resolving trainee rostering issues, in conjunction with the Medical Rostering Unit
- Demonstrate commitment to training and continuing professional development including participation in relevant teaching programs, activities, and feedback opportunities, involvement in research, and teaching of junior medical staff and/or medical students.
- Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

Qualifications
Essential
- Hold an Australian MBBS medical degree or equivalent.
- Registered or eligible for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (Ahpra).
- Successful completion of the RACP Divisional Written Exam (DWE) and Divisional Clinical Exam (DCE) at the time of the application.
Desirable
- Have an understanding of how the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) indicators align with this role.
- Preferably be in the final two years of FRACP Advanced Training in Acute and General Medicine or Subspecialty Training, or have received their Fellowship.
Experience
Essential
- Completed at least 48 months of (full time equivalent) experience in recognised registrar training position and substantially completed fellowship training
Desirable
- Experience or knowledge of the CHS Exceptional Care Framework, and all other related frameworks.
