Applications are invited for a Senior Resident Medical Officer, Coronary Care at Canberra Hospital and Health Services commencing in August 2026 for a period of one year with possible extension. To be eligible for this position, the successful applicant will need to be Post Graduate Year 3 + at the time of application.
Working within the Cardiology Services, the CCU SRMO will participate in a 12 hour 4 day per week roster, with the support of the Basic Physician Trainee, Cardiology Registrar and on call Cardiology consultant.
The Department of Cardiology at Canberra Hospital provides tertiary cardiology services to the ACT and Greater Southern NSW region. The department has 17 consultant cardiologists with four accredited Advanced Trainees, two unaccredited Trainees and three fellow positions. The Coronary Care Unit has 28 beds. The department has dedicated clinical cardiology programs in acute cardiovascular care, echocardiography, cardiac CT, interventional cardiology, structural cardiology, cardiac electrophysiology, adult congenital heart disease, heart failure and pulmonary hypertension.
Key responsibilities
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Provide competent and efficient clinical management of patients of the Health Directorate under the supervision and direction of Cardiologists and Consultant Physicians.
- Clinical duties will include support CCU / ward registrar with admission, management and discharge of patients admitted to CCU /Ward and Emergency department.
- Support consultants/fellows with outpatient consultations and reviews.
- Support admission and management of cardiology patients from emergency department and management of unwell CCU patients, during night, with assistance from on call Cardiology registrar/ consultant. This position also provides medical coverage for respiratory patients during night shift.
- Maintain adequate medical records
- Participate in the afterhours roster for the Coronary Care unit.
- Contribute to clinical audit, departmental morbidity and mortality conference and participate in changes that improve quality and safety of patient care.
- Demonstrate commitment to training and continuing professional development including participation in relevant teaching programs, activities, and feedback opportunities, involvement in research, and teaching of junior medical staff and/or medical students
- Comply with the policies and requirements of the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency and the policies of the Health Directorate
- Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

Qualifications
Essential
- An Australian MBBS medical degree or equivalent.
- Registered or eligible for general registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (Ahpra).
- Current Basic Life Support and Advanced Life Support Certificate.
- You must be PGY3+ from August 2026
Desirable
- Have an understanding of how the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) indicators align with this role.
- Fulfil the responsibilities of this role in alignment to the CHS Exceptional Care Framework, Clinical Governance Framework, Partnering for Exceptional Care Framework and all other related frameworks.
