Applications are invited for the following Post Graduate Fellow positions for the 2027 clinical year, with possible extension.

The Department of Cardiology has completed a state-of-the-art Heart Care Centre, incorporating Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery services in the Cardiac Care Unit and Interventional Cardiology Laboratory.
We have a well-established service with 18 consultant medical staff positions, four Accredited Cardiology Advanced Trainees, and two Unaccredited Cardiology Advanced Trainees, in addition to Basic Physician Trainees and other Junior Medial Officers. They work as part of a large multidisciplinary team including specialist nursing staff, cardiac physiologists, cardiac sonographers, administrative staff and the cardiac rehabilitation team. Patients accessing the services include adults of all ages, acuity, frailty and disability, who present for diagnosis and treatment of a range of acute and chronic cardiac conditions. Our Cardiology Team strives to deliver an exceptional and caring service for our patients, our community and each other.
The coronary care unit is a 28-bed unit. The cardiology outpatient service provides over 5000 episodes of care annually with increasing demand each year. There is a close working relationship with our cardiothoracic surgical unit.
Electrophysiology Fellow and Clinical Research
With three Electrophysiologists plus two advanced pacing consultants, the successful candidate will gain experience in contemporary pacing strategies and advanced ablation techniques. This position offers an exciting opportunity to engage in cutting-edge cardiovascular research while gaining valuable clinical experience in EP in a tertiary hospital setting. The successful candidate will work closely with the Cardiology Research Team, contributing to both clinical and translational research projects aimed at improving patient outcomes.
Imaging and Echocardiography
The successful candidate will undergo extensive training in echocardiography including transthoracic, transoesophageal, stress echocardiography, structural guidance echocardiography, contrast echocardiography and CTCA.
Interventional Cardiology
The Interventional Cardiology Service includes two dedicated cardiac catheter laboratories which undertake over 900 coronary interventional procedures (250 STEMIs) annually. It provides a 24/7 service for primary PCI for acute ST elevation myocardial infarction for the region. A structural heart disease program developed with TAVI, PFO/ASD, TEER, LAAO performed. We have a strong reliance on adjunct therapies such as IVUS, OCT, FFR, Shockwave and Rotablation
Key responsibilities
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Commitment to continuing professional development by attending relevant seminars and conferences to maintain up to date knowledge and practices and to maintain current college mandated requirements.
- Provide high-quality clinical care to cardiology patients, participate in on-call duties, and assist in training junior medical staff and students.
- Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.
- Participate in 1:8 overnight cardiology call.
Electrophysiology Fellow and Clinical Research
- Provide service for EP with three dedicated days in EP Cath Lab with two days in Research.
- Design, develop, and execute cardiology research projects, ensuring they meet the criteria for potential PhD submissions with successful funding applications.
- Prepare research protocols, ethics submissions, and grant applications, while conducting literature reviews to stay current with cardiology advancements.
- Collect, analyse, and interpret research data with a focus on accuracy and integrity, contributing to publications in peer-reviewed journals and conferences.
- Present research findings at departmental meetings, national, and international conferences, while mentoring junior registrars and research students.
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation of research activities, ensuring compliance with regulatory and ethical standards. Assist in managing research budgets and resources, while engaging in continuous professional development through relevant courses and workshops.
Imaging and Echocardiography
- Perform and report transoesophageal echocardiogram under supervision.
- Perform and report transthoracic echocardiogram under supervision.
- Perform and report stress echocardiogram under supervision.
- Perform and report TAVI CTs, CT coronary angiograms and calcium scores.
- Expected exposure - 500 transthoracic echocardiography reports, 100 transoesophageal echocardiography performance and reports, 300 stress echocardiography reports, 50 Definity contrast studies and 50 agitated saline studies.
- Partake in clinical research associated with echocardiography
- Contribute to divisional quality programs and safety, including morbidity and mortality conferences
Interventional Cardiology
- Participate in a wide range of interventional cardiology procedures, including but not limited to angioplasty, stent placement, and coronary interventions. Assist with TAVI, PFO/ASD closures, LAAO, TEER and adjunct therapies such as IVUS, OCT, FFR, Shockwave and Rotablation.
- Collaborate with the multidisciplinary team to ensure comprehensive patient assessment and optimal procedural outcomes.
- Participate in Primary PCI service with consultant supervision, including out of hours.
- Participate in Heart Teams and other multidisciplinary team meetings.

Qualifications
Essential
- Must have an Australian MBBS medical degree or equivalent
- Registered or eligible for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (Ahpra).
- Hold a Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP) in Cardiology or an equivalent higher specialist qualification
- Have completed three years of advanced training in cardiology
- Must be PGY7+
Desirable
- Have an understanding of how the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) indicators align with this role.
- Experience or knowledge of the CHS Exceptional Care Framework, and all other related frameworks.
- Experience with clinical trial coordination and data management.
- Proficiency in statistical software (e.g., SPSS, R) and research databases.
- Familiarity with ethical guidelines and regulatory requirements for clinical research.

- Extensive clinical experience in the practice of General Cardiology and Cardiac Imaging to manage the varied caseloads and case mix, and to practice evidence-based person-centred care, along with a demonstrated commitment to the maintenance and further development of these skills
