Applications are sought for the 2027 clinical year, commencing in February 2027 for a period of 12 months, with possible extension. To be eligible to apply for this position, you must be PGY4+ by February 2027.
This position is with the Department of Bariatric Medicine (DBM), a multidisciplinary team and is located at Belconnen Community Health Centre. The team provide medically led clinic-based multidisciplinary care for people living with severe obesity and it’s complications, including support for provision of available public funded bariatric surgery.
This position would be suitable for candidates with an interest in obesity and chronic disease management
Key responsibilities
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Provide clinical and population health management of patients of Canberra Health Services under the supervision and direction of a Consultant Medical Practitioner. The role includes direct clinical contact with patients at Department of Bariatric Medicine, and being part of a multi-disciplinary team providing input into the management of patients receiving care coordination and obesity/chronic disease management. It also involves preparing and presenting patient case studies for consideration of publicly funded bariatric surgery to the Bariatric Surgery Advisory Committee.
- Maintain a cooperative relationship with all relevant sections of Canberra Health Services and work collaboratively, flexibly, and efficiently and within an inter-professional clinical team.
- Participate in training and professional development of the Department of Bariatric Medicine and other Canberra Health Services staff on obesity and chronic disease as appropriate.
- Demonstrate progress in training in their chosen medical specialty including participation in the relevant teaching program and activities, and timely completion of all training and administrative requirements. Comply with the policies and requirements of the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) and CHS.
- Participate in research and evaluation of health services for people with obesity/chronic disease with the goal of presenting a poster and/or publication. Contribute to clinical audit and participate in changes that improve quality and safety of patient care.
- Maintain adequate and legible medical records and ensure that the clinical team completes all correspondence in a timely manner.
- Undertaking other duties as directed, within the approved scope of clinical practice ensuring the delivery of high quality person and family centred, safe and high quality patient care.

Qualifications
Essential
- An Australian MBBS medical degree, or equivalent
- Be registered, or be eligible for, registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA)
- Must be PGY4+ by February 2027
Desirable
- Be registered under the Working for Vulnerable People Act.
- Achieve and maintain currency in resuscitation and life support credentials.
- Have an understanding of how the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) indicators align with this role.
- Demonstrated interest in obesity management.
- Evidence of the ability and commitment to working collaboratively in a multidisciplinary clinical team.
- Experience or knowledge of the CHS Exceptional Care Framework, and all other related frameworks.

Computer literacy skills are required which are relevant to this role as you will be responsible for completing required documentation and becoming a proficient user of the Digital Health Record and/or other Information Technology systems; once proficient, you will need to remain current with changes, updates, and contingencies.

- Demonstrated sound clinical, supervisory, ethical and record keeping skills of clinical competence at a level commensurate with a postgraduate year three or above.
- Demonstrated commitment to continued professional development including advanced training in a medical specialty relevant to chronic disease management.

- Evidence of the ability and commitment to working collaboratively in a multidisciplinary clinical team.
