Nursing & Midwifery and Patient Support Services division comprises a range of support services across the clinical divisions which includes E-rostering unit, Infection Prevention and Control Unit, Nursing and Midwifery Resource Office, Spiritual Support Services, and Patient Support Services.

Patient Support Services provides support for the patients of Canberra Hospital through a range of services which include Wardspersons, Hospital Assistants, Central Equipment & Courier Service, Ward Clerks and Patient Liaison and Admission Team.

The Ward Clerk position provides general administrative, clerical and support services to clinical areas and assists with patient flow. The role involves assisting with patient admissions, discharges and transfers using Digital Health Record (DHR) and other business applications.

Key Responsibilities

Working under the direction of Ward Clerk Operations Manager you will provide administrative support services to the ward. You will:

  • Undertake a broad range of administrative and operational duties including accurately maintaining the Digital Health Record to a high standard, that includes:
    • Correct and timely admission, transfer and discharge processes.
    • Maintaining data quality and integrity.
    • Liaising with patients and/or their substitute decision makers.
  • Oversee and provide administrative support to the ward, including a broad range of enquiries and undertake liaison with patients, internal and external clients, and the public.
  • Resolve first level complaints/concerns from fellow team members, members of the public, medical practitioners and nursing staff relating to the provision of Ward Clerk Services within the unit.
  • Be responsible for mentoring, co-ordination and taking a lead with training team members within Ward Clerk Services.
  • Complete all mandatory training applicable to Ward Clerks in a timely manner.
  • Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organization.

Qualifications

Essential

  • The successful applicant will have to participate in a 24/7 rotating roster (day, evenings and night shift) and Monday to Friday day shifts.
  • Current driver's license.

Desirable

  • Have an understanding of how the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) indicators align with this role.
  • A knowledge and understanding of the Health Care System.
  • Prior experience in a healthcare setting will be highly desirable.
  • Adaptability and flexibility to accommodate change and provide responsive services to meet clients’ needs.
  • The ability to provide a high-quality customer service and proficient keyboard skills.
