The position is a 12-month temporary full-time position with a possibility of extension.

The position sits within the Allied Health Clinical Education Unit (AHCEU), based at the Canberra Hospital with time working at the University of Canberra Hospital.

The Speech Pathology Clinical Educator position provides clinical education and supervision support for speech pathology students and staff and assists with facilitating and promoting interprofessional clinical education activities. The clinical educator is pivotal to the successful facilitation of student placements and in supporting speech pathology staff with clinical education, supervision and skill acquisition. This position is for an experienced clinician who leads with commitment, is able to create solutions, demonstrates agility, communicates effectively, collaborates with purpose and is accountable for quality outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  1. Provide CHS-wide leadership in clinical education, teaching and education activities, including vocational education, undergraduate, postgraduate students in consultation with Professional Lead, senior management and the senior clinicians for Speech Pathology.
  2. Consultation with senior clinicians to ensure that clinical education and clinical supervision services are developed to meet evidence based best practice standards across a range of health care settings.
  3. Design, implement, and evaluate innovative student supervision models, including those that support high student-to-supervisor ratios.
  4. Design, implement and evaluate teaching activities relating to allied health and the professional field within and across designated program/s in consultation with relevant senior clinicians.
  5. Promotion and facilitation of clinical education research and/or quality improvements projects that align with CHS Values.
  6. Consultation and liaison with external agencies and relevant education providers in relation to clinical teaching, student placements, curriculum development and research.
  7. Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

Competencies

Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to the following.

  • Substantial knowledge and understanding of the principles, techniques, and practices required for providing clinical education functions to the Speech Pathology profession.
  • Capacity to coordinate student placements across diverse CHS services where Speech Pathologists work.
  • Ability to provide clinical supervision to students, new graduates and/or their primary supervisors including the ability to supervise students in high ratio placement models.
  • Ability to organise, develop, deliver and evaluate education and training programs for students and staff across Speech Pathology and Allied Health which may include interdisciplinary collaboration and leadership.
  • Ability to effectively consult and liaise with external agencies and education providers to support and enhance clinical teaching, student placements, curriculum development, and research initiatives.
  • Able to build and maintain strategic partnerships that contribute to the advancement of allied health education and fosters collaborative approaches to innovation and continuous improvement.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Eligibility for membership of Speech Pathology Australia.

Desirable

  • Tertiary qualification in a relevant education field or Certificate IV Workplace Training and Assessment or willing to work towards relevant education qualifications.
  • Have an understanding of how the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) indicators align with this role.

Experience

Essential

  • Have a minimum of 5 years’ experience since general registration.
  • Prior experience in designing, delivering, and evaluating education or training packages.

Appointment to this position is conditional on being granted and retaining appropriate clearances:

  • Pre-employment National Police Check.
  • Current registration issued under the Working with Vulnerable People (Background Checking) Act2011is required.
  • Comply with Canberra Health Services Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination policy.
  • Comply with CHS credentialing and scope of clinical practice requirements for allied health professionals.

  5. High level communication and collaboration skills within an interprofessional environment, including the demonstrated ability to establish and maintain relationships with internal and external service providers and stakeholders.
  6. Demonstrates understanding of, and adherence to, safety and quality standards, work, health and safety (WH&S) and the positive patient experience. Displays behaviour consistent with CHS’s values of reliable, progressive, respectful and kind.
