Position overview
The Senior Radiation Therapist- Educator is responsible for providing leadership in clinical education and competency-based training within the radiation therapy discipline to align with departmental and CHS policies and procedures.
They are expected to organise, manage, and deliver in-service training for Radiation Therapy staff, as well as oversee the on‑site coordination of student clinical placements.
The role requires a comprehensive understanding of the development and implementation of clinical protocols and procedures, maintenance of clinical competence in all functional areas, and demonstrated experience in multidisciplinary teams.
The Senior Radiation Therapist- Educator is also expected to actively engage in ongoing professional development and contribute to quality improvement activities within the department.
Key Responsibilities
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Lead and support Radiation Therapists in meeting the requirements of CPD, competency-based training, professional standards and ongoing professional development.
- Plan, coordinate and deliver staff training in planning, treatment and treatment verification, including rostering, targeted education and competency-based assessment.
- Develop, implement and monitor education frameworks, including CPD programs, retraining pathways and new graduate development programs.
- Oversee student placements and education programs, liaising with universities and professional bodies, ensuring assessments, feedback and orientation are completed.
- Support the introduction of new techniques, protocols and equipment through staff training, credentialing and operational readiness.
- Manage documentation and reporting for training, education, credentialing, audits and quality improvement activities.
- Lead or support quality assurance and safety initiatives, including audits, protocol reviews and WHS/environmental compliance.
- Promote quality improvement engagement, supporting staff and students in research projects and facilitating access to resources and data systems.
- Foster effective communication and teamwork, modelling positive interpersonal behaviour and maintaining strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
- Provide leadership in resource and service management, including efficient use of departmental resources and contributing to meetings, planning and performance processes.
- Maintain clinical competence for self and provide clinical cover through regular rotation across radiation therapy practice areas.
- Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

- Demonstrates ongoing competence in simulation, planning, imaging and treatment; applies WHS and radiation safety standards consistently.
- Indicators: Maintains credentialing; operates equipment per SOPs; reports/incidents managed per procedure
- Education Program Design & Delivery
- Designs, delivers and evaluates structured education (CPD, induction, interdisciplinary, retraining) aligned to regulatory and service needs.
- Indicators: Documented curricula with learning outcomes and assessments; programs reviewed and improved on a defined cycle.
- Student and Graduate/New Staff Development
- Coordinates high‑quality student placements and graduate/new staff pathways in partnership with universities and professional bodies.
- Indicators: Orientation within first week; midpoint/final feedback documented; assessments completed on time; positive student/university feedback.
- Credentialing, Auditing & Quality Improvement
- Builds and maintains robust credentialing and audit systems to assure training quality and clinical standards.
- Indicators: Live, traceable registers; targeted audits completed; action plans closed within agreed timeframes; measurable improvements in compliance.
- Change Management for New Techniques/Technologies
- Leads safe adoption of new protocols/equipment through structured training and readiness planning.
- Indicators: Training plans completed pre–go live; competency checks documented
- Stakeholder Communication & Collaboration
- Engages effectively with internal and external stakeholders (DRT/DDRT, RO/Physics/Nursing, universities, forums).
- Indicators: Regular liaison with documented actions; timely responses to training needs.
- Resource & Performance Management
- Optimises resources and prioritises workload to deliver education outcomes without compromising service delivery.
- Indicators: Training/rostering aligned to throughput targets; efficient use of budgeted resources; participation in PD.
Qualifications
Essential
- A recognised tertiary qualification in Radiation Therapy.
- Unconditional registration as a Radiation Therapy Practitioner with the AHPRA Medical Radiation Practice Board of Australia.
- ACT Radiation Council License to operate radiation emitting apparatus used for Radiation Therapy purposes.
Desirable
- Postgraduate qualification in education or similar.
- Have an understanding of how the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) indicators align with this role.
Experience
Essential
- A minimum of 5 years postgraduate experience.
Desirable
- Previous experience working in Radiation Therapy Education and Training.
- Experience or knowledge of the CHS Exceptional Care Framework, and all other related frameworks.
Prior to commencement
Appointment to this position is conditional on being granted and retaining appropriate clearances:
- Pre-employment National Police Check.
- Comply with Canberra Health Services Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination policy.
- Comply with CHS credentialing and scope of clinical practice requirements for allied health professionals.
