Position overview

Mental Health, Justice Health and Alcohol and Drug Services (MHJHADS) provides support to youth and adults via inpatient and outpatient settings, community health centres, justice health facilities and other community settings, including people’s homes. MHJHADS aims to be socially inclusive and operate within a recovery-focussed and/or harm minimisation approach. ACMHS teams operate across the Australian Capital Territory, adhering to the Adult Community Mental Health Model of Care. ACMHS program area services the community’s mental health needs in the areas of intake, recovery, supported and therapeutic accommodation, therapy, neuropsychology, assertive community outreach, homeless outreach, and intensive home treatment.

Specifically, this position is as a Senior Mental Health Clinician working within the Mental Health Link Team.

The Mental Health (MH) Link Team is an amalgamation of several specialist teams who provide care designed to support clients with a moderate to severe mental illness in the community. The MH Link team is comprised of the Homeless Outreach Team, Step-up Step-down Houses, Brief Intervention Program, ACMHS depot and Relprevv clinics, and Clozapine Coordinator; and provides support and consultation for the Wayback Program, Transition to Recovery Program, Justice Housing, and MHJHADS Supported Accommodation Houses. The Team also has an in-reach role, supporting inpatient settings linking clients with wrap-around support upon discharge. The successful applicant may be asked to work with any of the above sub-teams / programs as directed by the MH Link Team Manager.

The position is based at the City Community Health Centre, reports to the MH Link Team Leader, and is supported by a cohesive multidisciplinary team (including Nurses, Social Workers, Occupational Therapists, Psychologists, and Medical Officers). This is an exciting opportunity for someone who may be interested in working in a program that comprises access to services, hospital diversion, assertive outreach, community recovery, therapy services and consultation and liaison with a wide range of stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.

  1. As a member of a multidisciplinary team, provide advanced assessment and consultation liaison services for consumers by providing support with accommodation, social support, income, post suicide attempt community follow up and recovery partnership programs
  2. Exercise independent judgement on routine matters and perform novel, complex, or critical tasks.
  3. As part of a multidisciplinary team, work collaboratively in the formulation, implementation, and monitoring of consumers to promote positive mental health outcomes.
  4. Provide support, consultation, liaison and education to consumers, families, direct care and non-direct care workers and agencies concerning the special needs of individuals who experience mental illness / mental disorder.
  5. Develop and maintain collaborative cross-agency relationships.  Attend Partnership Meetings within the focus of your portfolio, providing clinical support to both sub-acute residential facilities that are managed by Community Organisations.
  6. Active contribution in the implementation of clinical governance activities, quality improvement projects, divisional safety and quality initiatives, research programs, and health promotion.
  7. Complete clinical and administrative data collection, evaluation to a high standard monthly, and undertake other administrative tasks upon request.
  8. Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

Qualifications

Specific qualifications include, but are not limited to, the following.

Essential

  • Relevant Tertiary qualifications.
  • A current driver’s license.

For Occupational Therapy:

  • Be registered or be eligible for general registration with Occupational Therapy Board of Australia under the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).

For Psychology:

  • Be registered or be eligible for general registration with Psychology Board of Australia under the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).

For Social Work:

  • Degree in Social Work, professional membership, or eligibility for professional membership of the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW), and registration under the ACT Working with Vulnerable People Act 2011.

Experience

Specific experience include, but are not limited to, the following.

  • A minimum of 3 years’ experience working professionally in mental health services.

  • Current registration issued under the Working with Vulnerable People (Background Checking) Act 2011 is required.

Under limited supervision, demonstrate an ability to undertake relevant advanced psychosocial assessment of people with moderate to severe mental illness, providing an advanced level of clinical leadership with the multidisciplinary team, using evidence-based knowledge to ensure that practice supports safe and quality health outcomes in partnership with consumers and carers.
  2. An ability to demonstrate an understanding of the principles of recovery, bed management/access to Partnership Programs, and the National Standards for Mental Health Services.
  3. Effective communication skills and an understanding of and willingness to participate in, research, quality improvement activities and clinical supervision. An ability or willingness to learn record keeping that assists with service delivery with specific Partnership Programs to improve service delivery, trends or needs. An ability to foster relationships with services.
  4. Applied knowledge of current mental health services (both government and non-government) within the ACT and an advanced knowledge of current mental health and other relevant legislation including the Mental Health Act 2015 (ACT).
  5. Demonstrated understanding of, and commitment to, safety and quality standards, workplace health and safety (WH&S), and the delivery of a positive patient experience. Exhibits behaviours aligned with Canberra Health Services’ values of reliability, progressiveness, respect, and kindness.
