Position overview
The Infrastructure and Health Support Services, Facilities Management Division, is responsible for planned and reactive maintenance, asset management, utilities and contracts and leasing for the Canberra Health Services property portfolio across the ACT.
The Senior Electrician will have a unique understanding of the responsibilities and accountabilities of the role, being able to work collaboratively across a range of areas in CHS. The incumbent will provide outstanding leadership, communicate professionally and work with flexibility, efficiency, and diplomacy both individually and as part of a complex team effort.
Key Responsibilities
The Senior Electrician will report to the Facilities Operations Manager and will be responsible for supervision activities of the electrical workshop, providing direction to workshop trade staff and scheduling of work in accordance with priorities established by the Facilities Operations Manager at the Canberra Hospital.
You will:
- Actively manage the day-to-day operations of the electrical workshop and oversee other trade staff activities within the workshop, reporting to the Facilities Operations Manager where required.
- Undertake planned and reactive maintenance relating to building activities including undertaking essential repair works and general maintenance activities at the request of Management.
- Liaise with the workshop staff regarding plant or equipment failures and request the supply of goods and/or services as necessary.
- Undertake fault finding on building related equipment and systems and report findings.
- Allocate work orders from the Facilities Operations Manager to the appropriate trade staff member within the electrical workshop and follow up where required.
- Participate in Facilities Management process improvement activities, and where appropriate recommend the investigation of process improvements related to the work area.
- Follow defined WHS and injury management policies and procedures related to the work being undertaken, in order to ensure their own safety and the safety of others in the workplace.
- Ensure and maintain a high level of safety and cleanliness in the electrical workshop.
- Complete all service report sheets, work orders from the maintenance and asset management system, logbooks and test certificates in hard copy or electronic logger as necessary.
- Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

Qualifications
Essential
- Trade Certificate III in Electrotechnology Electrician.
- Unrestricted Electrical Licence.
- Asbestos Awareness Training.
- General Induction White Card.
- Crystalline Silica Exposure and Awareness.
Desirable
- Confined Space training or willingness to participate in an employer-sponsored course within the first 12 months of employment
- Working at Heights training or willingness to participate in an employer-sponsored course within the first 12 months of employment.
- Hold a current drivers’ licence.
Experience
Essential
- Proven experience as an electrician working in facilities management or construction environment, preferable in large health facilities or similar.
- Knowledge of Workplace Health and Safety requirements in facilities management or construction environment.
- Good communication skills both oral and written.
- Sound experience working with maintenance software and other computer applications such as Outlook, MS Word and Excel.
Desirable
- Have an understanding of how the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) indicators align with this role.
- Experience or knowledge of the CHS Exceptional Care Framework and all other related frameworks.

- Proven ability to apply specialist trade skills and knowledge in the maintenance and repair of electrical related tasks, electrical related installations and /or specialised equipment within a Health Care setting or similar environment.

- Proven knowledge of and understanding of Workplace Health and Safety requirements in both workshops and building environments.
- Demonstrated written and oral communication skills and customer focused service delivery.
