Position overview
Canberra Hospital is a tertiary teaching hospital providing trauma services and most major medical and surgical sub-specialty services. The Senior Director Office is a key position within the General Manager’s leadership team.
The Senior Director in the Office of the General Manager is a leadership role that provides strategic and operational support to the General Manager of Canberra Hospital. This role is pivotal to drive coordination, performance improvement and organisational alignment across services.
The Senior Director works closely with executive, senior clinical and operational leaders to ensure efficient service delivery, governance and alignment with Canberra Health Services objectives. This position leads and managers staff within the Office of the General Manager and Office of Professional Leadership.
Key Responsibilities
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.
Strategic Support and Co-ordination
- Provide high level strategic and operational advice as part of the senior leadership team to inform decision making to provide efficient, effective and patient centric healthcare services.
- Drive alignment of hospital operations with CHS Strategic and Corporate Plan.
Performance and Governance Oversight
- Monitor, analyse and report on data to support the General Manager to achieve strategic and operational objectives.
- Ensure governance structures and processes are in implemented and functioning to support delivery of a high quality, safe and sustainable services and mitigate risk in alignment with frameworks and plans.
- Support the management operational risks across the General Manager’s portfolio including risk identification, analysis and evaluation, risk treatment, maintenance of risk registers and escalation when required.
- Support the General Manager to plan, deliver and manage services using activity-based management.
Program and Project Leadership
- Lead and oversee priority programs and initiatives on behalf of the General Manager.
- Co-ordinate cross divisional projects, ensuring timely delivery and outcomes are achieved in alignment with scope and resource allocation.
- Act as a liaison point for high-priority operational or strategic issues.
Stakeholder and Relationship Management
- Develop and maintain productive relationships within Canberra Hospital and across the CHS network including but not limited to executives, directors, other directorates and community partners.
- Represent the General Manager in forums and meetings as required.
Operational Management and Leadership
- Lead an administrative team to support offices and services fostering a collaborative high-performing team culture.
Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

Essential
- Tertiary level qualification (or equivalent) in a relevant field or equivalent experience.

- Relevant post graduate qualifications in health management or leadership.

- A minimum of five years’ experience working at a senior level in a complex healthcare or government setting.
Desirable
- Knowledge of CHS Strategic Plan 2024-2029
- Experience or knowledge of the CHS Exceptional Care Framework, and all other related frameworks.
- Sound knowledge of the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) Standards, Clinical Care Standards and experience in ensuring these standards are met.

Computer literacy skills are required which are relevant to this role as you will be responsible for completing required documentation and becoming a proficient user of the Digital Health Record and/or other Information Technology systems; once proficient, you will need to remain current with changes, updates, and contingencies.
