Position overview
The Division of Surgery is responsible for delivering inpatient and outpatients surgical services and prevention and treatment dental health programs for children, targeted youth, and adults of the ACT and surrounding region. The Division includes Surgical Bookings and Pre-Admission Clinic, Anaesthesia, Pain Management Unit, Operating Theatres, Post-Anaesthetic Care Unit, Day Surgery Unit and Admissions / Extended Day Surgery Unit, specialist surgical ward areas, medical and nursing Outpatient services, Shock Trauma Service, Trauma and Orthopaedic Research Unit, and the ACT Dental Health Program.
The Peri-Operative Unit at Canberra Hospital consists of a Day of Surgery Admissions (DOSA) Unit, Operating Theatres covering a wide range of surgical specialities, Post Anaesthetic Care Unit (PACU) and Extended Day Surgery Unit (EDSU) together with several out of areas procedural/invasive specialty areas.
The resource technician reports directly to the Registered Nurse and Resource Manager Perioperative Unit and joins the resource team. This position is responsible at an operational level for the coordination and management of supplies required within Perioperative Services.
Note: This position involves participating in a rotating roster. The rotating shift roster will require the employee to work all shifts within a 24 hour/ 7 days per week roster. This position also involves working across all Canberra Hospital Perioperative Services (Building 12 and Building 5).
Key Responsibilities
Under limited direction of the Registered Nurse, you will:
- Inspect, rotate, maintain correct storage, and transportation of RMD across all areas of Perioperative Services and nearby health facilities in accordance with AS_5369_2023 sterilising requirements, including environmental cleaning, align with National Safety and Quality in Health Care Standard and Infection Control guidelines.
- Pre cleaning and decontamination of contaminated RMDs and non-critical reusable equipment.
- Perform set ups for elective and emergency procedures.
- Participate in housekeeping duties include but not limited to shelf labelling, put away unused sterile RMDs and consumables.
- Adhere to the requirements of the Safety Management Systems and Work Health and Safety Act.
- Use a computerised tracking and data management systems to facilitate the stock management to meet daily operational demand.
- Participate with audits and quality improvements activities.
- Identify, report, and recommend appropriate remedial action on any deficiencies in operation of sterile stock rooms including incident reporting and any deficiencies in quality standards to the Registered Nurse in charge.
- Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

Qualifications and Experience
Specific qualifications and experience include, but is not limited to, the following.
Essential
- This position is required to work across all Perioperative sites at CHS and participate in a rotating roster that includes a 24 hour/7days per week roster, including public holidays, if required.
Desirable
- Understanding the reusable medical device (RMD) reprocessing, including pre cleaning, disinfection, inspection, of standard RMDs, Including correct storage of RMDs according to AS_5369_2023.
- Have an understanding of how the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) indicators align with this role.
- Experience or knowledge of the CHS Exceptional Care Framework and all other related frameworks.
Prior to commencement
Appointment to this position is conditional on being granted and retaining appropriate clearances:
- Undergo a pre-employment National Police Check.
