Position overview
The Infrastructure and Health Support Services, Facilities Management Division, is responsible for planned and reactive maintenance, asset management, utilities and contracts and leasing for the Canberra Health Services property portfolio across the ACT.
The Plumbing technician will have a unique understanding of the responsibilities and accountabilities of the role, being able to work collaboratively across a range of areas in CHS. The incumbent will provide outstanding leadership, communicate professionally and work with flexibility, efficiency, and diplomacy both individually and as part of a complex team effort
Key Responsibilities
Under limited direction of the Plumbing Workshop Senior, you will be responsible for planned and reactive maintenance activities in accordance with priorities established by the Workshop Senior and Facilities Operations Manager at Canberra Hospital.
- Undertake planned and reactive maintenance relating to hydraulic activities. This includes essential repair work and general maintenance activities at the request of the Plumbing Workshop Senior or Facilities Operations Manager.
- Liaise with the Plumbing Workshop Senior regarding plant or equipment failures and to request the supply of goods and/or services as necessary.
- Undertake fault finding on plumbing equipment and systems and report findings.
- Participate in Facilities Management process improvement activities, and where appropriate recommend the investigation of process improvements related to the work area.
- Follow defined WH&S and injury management policies and procedures related to the work being undertaken, in order to ensure their own safety and the safety of others in the workplace.
- Ensure and maintain a high level of safety and cleanliness in the Plumbing Workshop.
- Complete all report documents, work orders, logbooks and test certificates in hard copy or electronic logger as necessary.
- Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organization.

Qualifications
Specific qualifications include, but are not limited to, the following.
Essential
- Trade certificate – Plumber, Drainer, Gasfitter.
- Working with asbestos containing materials.
- Asbestos Awareness training.
- Silica Awareness training.
- General induction white card.
Desirable
- Statement of attainment – backflow prevention.
- Statement of attainment – hot water temperature control devices.
- Statement of attainment – install and test medical gas pipeline systems.
- Confined Space training or willingness to participate in an employer-sponsored course within the first 12 months of employment.
- Working at Heights training or willingness to participate in an employer-sponsored course within the first 12 months of employment.
- Hold a current drivers’ license.
Experience
Specific experience includes but is not limited to the following.

- Hold a current drivers’ license.
Desirable
- Understanding of how to fulfil the responsibilities of this role in alignment to the CHS Exceptional Care Framework, Clinical Governance Framework, Partnering with Consumers Framework and all other related frameworks
- Understanding of how the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) indicators align with this role.
- Experience or knowledge of the CHS Exceptional Care Framework, and all other related frameworks.

- Proven ability to apply specialist trade skills and knowledge in the maintenance and repair of plumbing related tasks, plumbing related installations and /or specialised equipment within a Health Care setting or similar environment.
- Ability to understand priorities relating to plumbing trade services as it relates to patient care and to be able to complete work to meet those objectives.
- Proven knowledge of and understanding of Workplace Health and Safety requirements in both workshops and building environments.
- Demonstrated written and oral communication skills and customer focused service delivery.
- Demonstrates understanding of, and adherence to, safety and quality standards, Work Health and Safety and the positive patient experience. Displays behaviour consistent with CHS’s values of reliable, progressive, respectful, and kind.
