Position overview

The function of the Food Service Department is to prepare and serve meals and beverages to patients, staff and visitors, as well as the provision of services to other facilities of Canberra Health Services north and south of Canberra.

The Food Service Department prepares, cooks and serves an average equates to approximately 3000 meals daily for Canberra Health Services and National Capital Private Hospital.

Food Service is organised into the following functional areas:

  • Food Service Administration.
  • Operation Support Services - Food preparation and Food Production.
  • Patient Services:
    • Meal Plating and Rethermalisation
    • Meal deliveries to patients
    • Menu monitors.
  • Cafeteria: Food, meals and drinks for staff and guests.
  • Stores; Receipt, dispatch and storage of perishable and non-perishable food supplies.
  • External sites: Dhulwa & other Community Centres.

Key Responsibilities

Under limited direction of the Supervisor, you will perform duties required of the Operations Officer. You will:

  1. Undertake Patient / Client meal, mid meal, and beverages preparation, and plating according to departmental Food Safety & Nutritional Guidelines.
  2. Serve and collect meals, mid meals and beverages to wards and clients.
  3. Operate and clean the industrial dishwasher and other equipment.
  4. General cleaning of the kitchen including but not limited to floors, walls, benches, and pantry kitchens.
  5. Restock and replenish goods and pantries, including serve customers and food preparation.
  6. Prepare and serve Food and beverage, including receipt of monies and operating of cash registers.
  7. Provide customer and patient focused service, while undertaking relevant workplace training.
  8. Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

  • The successful applicant will need to be available for rotational morning, evening, weekend and public holiday shifts. Note: Some position’s will not be required to work shifts.

Desirable

  • Relevant Food Industry recognized qualifications and a minimum of 2 years’ experience working professionally in food services is preferred.
  • Current class C Driver’s License.

Appointment to this position is conditional on being granted and retaining appropriate clearances:

  • Pre-employment National Police Check.
  • Comply with Canberra Health Services Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination policy.

  1. Previous experience working in food services or a similar hospitality position.
  2. Proven sound knowledge and experience in food safety practices and Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP).
  3. Possess strong interpersonal and communication skills, which will be put to good use in liaising with patients, colleagues and customers.
  4. Successfully complete the Food Services workplace training program within six months.
  5. Demonstrates understanding of, and adherence to, safety and quality standards, work, health and safety (WH&S) and the positive patient experience. Displays behavior consistent with CHS’s values of reliable, progressive, respectful and kind.
