The Medical Imaging Department forms part of the CHS Medical Services Group which also includes Pharmacy, Healthcare Technology Management, the Prevocational Education and Training, the Medical Officer Support, Credentialing, Employment and Training Unit (MOSCETU), the GP Liaison Unit (GPLU), ACT Blood Count Program and the CHS Library and Multimedia service.

The CHS Nuclear Medicine Department sits within the Medical Imaging Department operating three gamma cameras (a Siemens Intevo Bold xSPECT/CT, Siemens ProSpecta SPECT/CT and Siemens Evo Excel Dual Head) and a full hot lab with weekly Technetium generator delivery and full suite of cold kit reconstitutions. The department also provides a Bone Mineral Density (BMD) service and operates a comprehensive PET/CT facility which incorporates a Siemens Biograph Vision 600 scanner, three uptake rooms, hot lab and an automatic injection system.

Comprehensive refurbishment of the department was completed in 2024, including expansion of the PET/CT service to include Gallium 68 generator offering PSMA and DOTATATE scanning. The service is expected to expand on capability to lead and participate in research projects.

Work in the department is both challenging and rewarding, with a comprehensive range of diagnostic and therapeutic Nuclear Medicine procedures being offered including paediatric, oncology and cardiac studies and diagnostic CT with/without contrast as required.

This position will suit an enthusiastic Nuclear Medicine Technologist with ability to develop and promote standards in a professional team. The successful applicant will be required to work across all areas of the Nuclear Medicine and PET Department, including BMD and Diagnostic CT.

Key Responsibilities

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  1. Perform diagnostic and therapeutic procedures in Nuclear Medicine, PET and BMD under limited guidance from senior staff members, and as required, perform standalone diagnostic CT scans.
  2. Prepare and accurately calibrate radiopharmaceuticals for administration, in conjunction with medical physics and the medical specialist as required. Maintain appropriate records.
  3. Administer radiopharmaceuticals by the appropriate method (intravenous, inhalation, ingestion). Apply radiation protection principles and ensure correct isotope handling techniques.
  4. Contribute to advances in technique and quality improvement programs to improve service delivery and implement best practice.
  5. Participate in and contribute to continuing education activities. Participate in the development and mentoring of students.
  6. Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification and within the approved scope of clinical practice which contribute to the operations of the organisation.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Relevant tertiary qualification (e.g. Bachelor of Applied Science in Medical Radiation Science (Nuclear Medicine) or equivalent)
  • Be registered or be eligible for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
  • Hold a current ACT Radiation Licence, or be eligible to obtain an ACT radiation licence, permitting dealings in Nuclear Medicine.

Desirable

  • Radiation Licence permitting Diagnostic CT
  • IV Cannulation Certificate
  • Interest and/or experience in undertaking research activities including participation in clinical trials and quality assurance programs.
  • Have an understanding of how the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) indicators align with this role.

Experience

Essential

  • Demonstrated understanding of clinical Nuclear Medicine and PET workflows in a tertiary hospital

Desirable

  • Post graduate experience working clinically in Nuclear Medicine, BMD, PET and/or Diagnostic CT.
  • Ability to cannulate range of patients
  • Tertiary hospital experience
  • Experience performing standalone diagnostic CT
  • Experience or knowledge of the CHS Exceptional Care Framework, and all other related frameworks.

Appointment to this position is conditional on being granted and retaining appropriate clearances:

  3. Demonstrated ability to maintain high standards of accuracy whilst exercising independent professional judgement and day to day problem solving skills to manage routine and complex workloads.
  4. Proven comprehensive knowledge of radiation dose and the radiation protection principles as they apply to Nuclear Medicine, PET and diagnostic CT, with the ability to implement safe radiation practices for patients, staff and the environment.
  5. Demonstrates understanding of, and adherence to, safety and quality standards, work, health and safety (WH&S) and the positive patient experience. Displays behaviour consistent with CHS’s values of reliable, progressive, respectful and kind.
