Position overview
The Medical Imaging Department forms part of the CHS Medical Services Group which also includes Pharmacy, Healthcare Technology Management, the Prevocational Education and Training, the Medical Officer Support, Credentialing, Employment and Training Unit (MOSCETU), the GP Liaison Unit (GPLU), ACT Blood Count Program and the CHS Library and Multimedia service.
The CHS Nuclear Medicine Department sits within the Medical Imaging Department operating three gamma cameras (a Siemens Intevo Bold xSPECT/CT, Siemens ProSpecta SPECT/CT and Siemens Evo Excel Dual Head) and a full hot lab with weekly Technetium generator delivery and full suite of cold kit reconstitutions. The department also provides a Bone Mineral Density (BMD) service and operates a comprehensive PET/CT facility which incorporates a Siemens Biograph Vision 600 scanner, three uptake rooms, hot lab and an automatic injection system.
Comprehensive refurbishment of the department was completed in 2024, including expansion of the PET/CT service to include Gallium 68 generator offering PSMA and DOTATATE scanning. The service is expected to expand on capability to lead and participate in research projects.
Work in the department is both challenging and rewarding, with a comprehensive range of diagnostic and therapeutic Nuclear Medicine procedures being offered including paediatric, oncology and cardiac studies and diagnostic CT with/without contrast as required.
Key Responsibilities
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Provide leadership, management, supervision, and clinical services within the NM/PET Modality in the Medical Imaging Department at Canberra Hospital
- Perform all diagnostic and therapeutic procedures within Nuclear Medicine, including diagnostic CT and DEXA scanning. Perform all aspects of Hotlab including appropriate isotope handling, preparation, and calibration of radiopharmaceuticals for patient administration, both diagnostically and therapeutically.
- Lead advances in technique and quality improvement programs to improve service delivery and implement best practice. Participate in and contribute to continuing education activities and in-service education sessions. Provide development and mentoring to junior staff and students.
- Exercise independent professional judgement to perform and train other staff in routine and advanced NM/PET procedures in a RIS/PACS environment. Assist with the more complex procedures as required.
- Report equipment failures, maintain records of service history, and maintain appropriate records of procedures.
- Contribute to the recruitment, performance management and staff development of Health Professionals within the NM/PET Modality.
- Maintain a high standard of clinical practice and professional leadership by participating in ongoing professional and organisational education and training, quality assurance, and research.
- Contribute to policy and procedure development applicable to professional practice.
- Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

Qualifications
Essential
- Relevant tertiary qualification (e.g. Bachelor of Applied Science in Medical Radiation Science (Nuclear Medicine) or equivalent)
- Be registered or be eligible for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
- Hold a current ACT Radiation Licence, or be eligible to obtain an ACT radiation licence, permitting dealings in Nuclear Medicine.
Desirable
- Clinical education experience and possession of relevant demonstrated professional development in the delivery of clinical education or an education qualification is highly regarded.
- Radiation Licence permitting Diagnostic CT.
- Continuing interest and experience in undertaking research activities including participation in clinical trials and quality assurance programs.
- Have an understanding of how the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) indicators align with this role.
Experience
Essential
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience working professionally in Nuclear Medicine and PET.
- Ability to perform IV cannulation on a range of patients.
Desirable
- 7+ years working in Nuclear Medicine, including tertiary hospital experience
- Experience in clinical leadership positions
- Experience performing standalone diagnostic CT
- Experience with Gallium-68 generators, preparation and quality control of PMSA, DOTATATE and/or other novel PET isotopes
- Experience organising and delivering radioactive therapy treatments to patients (eg. I-131, Lu-177 Sr‑90)
- Experience or knowledge of the CHS Exceptional Care Framework, and all other related frameworks.

Appointment to this position is conditional on being granted and retaining appropriate clearances:

- Proven experience coordinating day to day operation of a Nuclear Medicine department, including clinical assessments and performance of a range of diagnostic, therapeutic and research procedures in Nuclear Medicine and PET.
- Proven experience with the management and implementation of new diagnostic services, including establishment, training, and logistic integration.
- Demonstrated ability to maintain high standards of accuracy whilst exercising independent professional judgement and day to day problem solving skills to manage routine and complex workloads.
- High level liaison, consultation and communication skills with respect to members of staff, patients, users of the Medical Imaging Department, and external stakeholders including educational institutions, professional organisations and regulatory bodies.
