Position overview
The Medical Imaging Department at CHS operates 24 hours, seven days week, providing a wide range of diagnostic imaging services. The service provides state-of-the-art Diagnostic Imaging, Interventional Radiology and Nuclear Medicine services to patients in Canberra and the Southeast Region of NSW. The service is committed to providing patients with contemporary diagnostic and Interventional Radiology, as well as molecular imaging services with a strong commitment to research and training in advancing the use of imaging for diagnosis and treatment of disease.
The Medical Imaging Department forms part of the CHS Medical Services Group which also includes Pharmacy, Healthcare Technology Management, the Prevocational Education and Training, the Medical Officer Support, Credentialling, Employment and Training Unit (MOSCETU), the GP Liaison Unit (GPLU), ACT Blood Counts Program and the CHS Library and Multimedia.
The MRI Level 3 radiographer position will need to perform all aspects of MRI while always observing departmental protocols and MRI safety. In addition to the provision of excellent patient care, the position contributes to scheduling and throughput of patients, effective utilization of available resources to support MRI in the Medical Imaging Department, supervision to junior staff and students to ensure high quality clinical service, and timely patient care.
This position is required to support the Medical Imaging Department with the provision of a 24-hour day, seven-day-a-week service. This includes shift work, overtime and on-call duties outside of normal business hours where required.
Key Responsibilities
Under limited direction of the MRI Modality Lead, and the MI4 MRI radiographers you will:
- Perform all aspects of MRI while observing departmental and local protocols whilst adhering to MRI safety procedures.
- Liaise with multi-disciplinary team members to facilitate timely care for patients, working with team leaders and managers to ensure cost effective delivery.
- Contribute to the evaluation and analysis of policies and procedures applicable to professional practice.
- Participate in ongoing professional education, and assist with supervision, training and mentoring of junior staff and students.
- Initiate and coordinate quality improvement activities and quality assurance programs, exercising independent professional judgment in problem solving and service delivery.
- Report equipment failures, maintain records of service history, and maintain appropriate records of procedures.
- Undertake other duties appropriate to this classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.
Qualifications and Experience
Specific qualifications include, but are not limited to, the following.
Essential
- Be registered or be eligible for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
- Relevant tertiary qualifications in Medical Radiation Science (Radiography) or equivalent.
- Eligible for membership with the Australian Society of Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy.
- Australian Society of Medical Imaging & Radiation Therapy MRI level 1 Certification.
- As required hold or be eligible for an ACT Radiation Licence (or be eligible to obtain).
- The successful applicant will need to be available to undertake shift work participating in a 24/7 roster including after-hours and weekend, as well as participation in on-call and close-call rosters.
Desirable
- A minimum of five years’ experience working professionally in general radiography is preferred.
- Experience teaching and or mentoring Medical Imaging MRI staff and students.
- Have an understanding of how the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) indicators align with this role.
- Experience or knowledge of the CHS Exceptional Care Framework and all other related frameworks.

Appointment to this position is conditional on being granted and retaining appropriate clearances:
- Undergo a pre-employment National Police Check.
- Comply with Canberra Health Services Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination policy.
- Comply with CHS credentialing and scope of clinical practice requirements for allied health professionals.

- Demonstrated active involvement in professional development activities through presentation of in services, participation in tertiary education programs, and initiation and coordination of quality improvement activities.
- High level liaison, consultation and communication skills with respect to members of staff, patients and users of the Medical Imaging Department.
