Position overview

Our role is to lead and direct strategic communications, engagement and media activities that support CHS to achieve its goals.

We are a dedicated, fun, hard-working team committed to supporting CHS staff to deliver business objectives and help drive positive cultural change through effective, timely and progressive communication activities.

We work hard to ensure the Canberra community is well informed on government programs, policies and services, and has meaningful opportunities to inform decision making. We listen to the people of Canberra and are their voice in government. We value ongoing learning and will support you to grow your career.

You'll manage the day-to-day delivery of internal communications, including newsletters, intranet content and staff updates and engagement activities, keeping employees informed and engaged across the organisation. Working closely with business areas, you'll turn what's happening across CHS into content and engagement opportunities that staff actually want to read and participate in. Your content will be written in plain language and pitched to a busy, largely non-desk-based workforce. Reporting to the Assistant Director, Communication and Engagement, you'll be a key point of contact for internal comms requests, balancing several projects at once while keeping quality and consistency high.

Key Responsibilities

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.

Under direction of the Assistant Director, Communication and Engagement, you will:

  1. Write, edit and publish internal communications content, including newsletters, intranet articles and staff updates.
  2. Develop internal communication and engagement plans and strategies and support their day-to-day delivery.
  3. Manage the day-to-day forward schedule for internal content, keeping planning on track and channels up to date.
  4. Act as a first point of contact for internal comms requests, triaging and prioritising incoming work.
  5. Build and maintain relationships with content contributors across the business to source timely, accurate updates.
  6. Proofread and edit content from other teams to a consistent standard of tone, clarity and plain English.
  7. Monitor engagement with internal content and use this to improve what's produced.
  8. Support the planning and delivery of staff engagement activities and campaigns.
  9. Maintain and update intranet (SharePoint) pages and content libraries.
  10. Manage internal comms inboxes and respond to/or redirect queries as needed.
  11. Engage confidently with clinical and corporate staff to identify and bring the CHS story to life across channels.
  12. Collaborate with the wider Communications team to ensure content is consistent, on-brand and aligned to broader goals and priorities.
  13. Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

  • A practical, can-do approach to problem-solving.
  • Confidence to provide constructive feedback on content and advocate for quality, while maintaining positive working relationships.
  • Sound judgement in tailoring content to genuinely resonate with staff, rather than simply meeting brief.
  • Ability to remain calm, organised and effective when managing competing demands under pressure.
  • Strong interest in CHS’s operations, translating into content that is well-informed and credible.
  • Good stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to build effective relationships and influence at all levels of the organisation.
