The Infrastructure and Health Support Services, Facilities Management Division, is responsible for planned and reactive maintenance, asset management, utilities and contracts and leasing for the Canberra Health Services property portfolio across the ACT.

The HVAC&R technician will have a unique understanding of the responsibilities and accountabilities of the role, being able to work collaboratively across a range of areas in CHS. The incumbent will provide outstanding leadership, communicate professionally and work with flexibility, efficiency, and diplomacy both individually and as part of a complex team effort.

Key Responsibilities

Under limited direction of the HVAC&R Workshop Senior you will be responsible for planned and reactive maintenance activities in accordance with priorities established by the Workshop Senior and Facilities Operations Manager at Canberra Hospital.

You will:

  1. Undertake planned and reactive maintenance relating to Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration. This includes essential repair work and general maintenance activities at the request of the HVAC&R Workshop Senior or Facilities Operations Manager.
  2. Liaise with the HVAC&R Workshop Senior regarding plant or equipment failures and to request the supply of goods and/or services as necessary.
  3. Undertake fault finding on HVAC&R mechanical equipment and systems and report findings.
  4. Participate in Facilities Management process improvement activities, and where appropriate recommend the investigation of process improvements related to the work area.
  5. Follow defined WH&S and injury management policies and procedures related to the work being undertaken, in order to ensure their own safety and the safety of others in the workplace.
  6. Ensure and maintain a high level of safety and cleanliness in the HVAC&R Workshop.
  7. Complete all report documents, work orders, logbooks and test certificates in hard copy or electronic logger as necessary.
  8. Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Trade certificate III in Air Conditioning and Refrigeration.
  • Restricted Electrical Licence.
  • Refrigerant Handling Licence.
  • Asbestos Awareness Training.
  • General Induction White Card.
  • Crystalline Silica Exposure and Awareness.

Desirable

  • Confined Space training or willingness to participate in an employer-sponsored course within the first 12 months of employment.
  • Working at Heights training or willingness to participate in an employer-sponsored course within the first 12 months of employment.
  • Hold a current drivers’ licence.

Experience

Essential

  • Proven experience as a HVAC&R technician working in facilities management or construction environments preferable in large health facilities or similar.
  • Knowledge of WHS and Safety requirements in facilities management or construction environment.
  • Good communication skills both oral and written.
  • Sound experience working with maintenance software and other computer applications such as Outlook, MS Word and Excel.

What you Require (Key Selection Criteria)

  1. Proven experience in HVAC&R services and specialised equipment in a large health care setting or similar environment, and the ability to use (or the potential to learn to use) the BMS (Building Management System) and the Computerised Maintenance Management System.
  2. Ability to understand priorities relating to services and patient care and to be able to complete work to meet those objectives.
  3. Proven knowledge of and understanding of Workplace Health and Safety requirements in both workshops and building environments.
  4. Demonstrated written and oral communication skills and customer focused service delivery.
  5. Demonstrated sound experience in the use of Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, Outlook, and Asset Management Software in a facilities management and maintenance environment.
  6. Demonstrates understanding of, and adherence to, safety and quality standards, work, health and safety (WH&S) and the positive patient experience. Displays’ behaviour consistent with CHS’s values of reliable, progressive, respectful and kind.
