Position overview
The Infrastructure and Health Support Services, Facilities Management Division, is responsible for planned and reactive maintenance, asset management, utilities and contracts and leasing for the Canberra Health Services property portfolio across the ACT.
The FM Trades Assistant will have a unique understanding of the responsibilities and accountabilities of the role, being able to work collaboratively across a range of areas in CHS. The incumbent will communicate professionally and work with flexibility, efficiency, and diplomacy both individually and as part of a complex team effort.
Key Responsibilities
Under limited direction of the Workshop Senior, you will be responsible for planned and reactive maintenance activities in accordance with priorities established by the Workshop Senior and Facilities Operations Manager at Canberra Hospital.
- Assist with planned and reactive maintenance relating to all FM-related trades and carrying out minor repairs that do not require trade skills and qualifications. This includes undertaking essential works and assisting with general maintenance activities.
- Providing assistance to support FM deliverables by working with a diverse range of workshops and liaising with multiple workshop Senior Staff.
- Undertake general cleaning duties of plantrooms and workshops.
- Assist with minor relocations of equipment and furniture.
- Follow defined WH&S and injury management policies and procedures related to the work being undertaken, in order to ensure their own safety and the safety of others in the workplace.
- Ensure and maintain a high level of safety and cleanliness in the FM Workshops and campus sites.
- Complete all report sheets, work orders, logbooks and test certificates in hard copy or electronic logger as necessary.
- Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

Qualifications
Specific qualifications include, but are not limited to, the following.
Essential
- Asbestos Awareness training.
- Working Safely with Asbestos Containing Materials.
- Silica Awareness training.
- General induction white card.
Desirable
- Confined Space training or willingness to participate in an employer-sponsored course within the first 12 months of employment.
- Working at Heights training or willingness to participate in an employer-sponsored course within the first 12 months of employment.
- Hold a current drivers’ license.
- Forklift ticket.
- EWP ticket.
Experience
Specific experience includes but is not limited to the following.
Essential
- Knowledge of WHS and Safety requirements in facilities management or construction environment.
- Good communication skills both oral and written.
- Sound experience working with maintenance software and other computer applications such as Outlook, MS Word and Excel.
Desirable
- Have an understanding of how the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) indicators align with this role.
- Experience or knowledge of the CHS Exceptional Care Framework, and all other related frameworks.

Appointment to this position is conditional on being granted and retaining appropriate clearances:
- Undergo a pre-employment National Police Check.

- Proven experience in assisting trade staff in a large health care setting or similar environment.
- Ability to understand priorities relating to services and patient/client care and to be able to complete work to meet those objectives.

- Demonstrated written and oral communication skills and customer focused service delivery.
- Demonstrates understanding of, and adherence to, safety and quality standards, Work Health and Safety and the positive patient experience. Displays’ behavior consistent with CHS’s values of reliable, progressive, respectful, and kind.
