Position overview
The Deputy Project Director will report to the Executive Group Manager and undertake key activities to support the planning, business case development, design and delivery of projects within the Campus Modernisation portfolio. The role will require working in close collaboration with Infrastructure Canberra, Health and Community Services Directorate, and stakeholders.
The Deputy Project Director will be responsible for management oversight and coordination of several critical project components for CHS, ensuring that they are planned and delivered to agreed timeframes, scope and budget.
Key Responsibilities
Under limited direction of the Executive Group Manager, you will:
- Undertake the planning, business case development and associated activities for strategic projects, ensuring clear definition of project objectives, scope, business cases and outcomes, while aligning with stakeholder expectations.
- Undertake management of procurement activities for CHS including the preparation of consultant engagement briefs and tender packages for relevant design and construction activities, ensuring that stakeholder feedback and compliance with all relevant policies and procedures.
- Lead the delivery and management of capital works projects ensuring that CHS input into project documentation development and oversight the agreed scope aspects of projects are monitored and controlled.
- Actively monitor project milestones and ensure performance indicators are met, issues/risks with appropriate mitigation strategies identified, and stakeholders are informed.
- Manage CHS input associated CHS operational readiness, and their impact on CHS clinical services delivery.
- Maintain and pursue continual improvement of business practices and deliverables including facilitating the sharing of knowledge across teams and government directorates.
- Maintain positive working relationships with project stakeholders, ensuring they receive regular information updates, and minimising impacts to clinical services.
- Represent the Executive Group Manager at project meetings.
- Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

Qualifications
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.
Essential
- Engineering – a four-year degree or higher qualification accredited by Engineers Australia or Professionals Australia for recognition as a Profesisonal Engineer (including recognition of equivalent overseas Engineering qualifications); or
- Architecture – a three-year degree or higher qualification accredited by an Australian State or Territory architecture authority for recognition as a Professional Architect (including recognition of equivalent overseas qualifications); or
- Project Manager – either:
- A diploma in Project Management accredited by an Australian State or Territory tertiary education institution or an equivalent overseas qualification that is eligible for reciprocal recognition in Australia and a minimum of 10 years relevant experience in project management; or
- A certification by a professional body, such as the Australian Institute of Project Management (AIPM), to the level of Certified Practicing Project Director (CPPD) or Certified Practicing Portfolio Executive (CPPE), in additional to a relevant degree or higher qualification issues by an Australian State or Territory tertiary education institution or an equivalent overseas qualification that is eligible for reciprocal recognition in Australia and a minimum of 10 years relevant experience in project management.
Desirable
- General Construction Induction Card (White Card) for working on a construction site.
- Certified Asbestos and Silica Awareness training.
Experience
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.
Essential
- 10 years of experience in a relevant career in alignment with the essential qualifications.
Desirable
- Have an understanding of how the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) indicators align with this role.
- Experience or knowledge of the CHS Exceptional Care Framework, and all other related frameworks.

- Demonstrated ability to lead and coordinate a team of professional staff whilst managing multiple deadlines with competing priorities to deliver results under pressure.
- Proven high level experience with Tier 1 projects in a complex and challenging operating environment, including ability to analyse problems and identify strategies that address project risks.
- Highly developed oral and written communication skills, proven ability to engage and negotiate effectively with a broad range of stakeholders, as well as the ability to produce complex reports and submissions.
- Demonstrated knowledge of government procurement, and budget processes, or demonstrated ability to quickly acquire this knowledge, for project and contract management.
- Demonstrates understanding of, and adherence to, safety and quality standards, Work Health and Safety and the positive patient experience. Displays’ behaviour consistent with CHS’s values of reliable, progressive, respectful, and kind.
