Position overview
Canberra Health Services Dental ( CHSD) within the Division of Rehabilitation, Aged and Community Services (RACS) provides adult, child and youth general dental, restorative, special needs, General Anaesthetic (GA), Relative Analgesia (RA), and specialist Surgical and Orthodontic services to the eligible members of the ACT community. The service currently operates from five Community Health Centres and three hospitals across the ACT region, as well as operating within ACT corrective services and from mobile dental clinics as below:
- Gungahlin Community Health Centre – Six dental chairs
- Belconnen Community Health Centre – Eleven dental chairs
- City Community Health Centre - Ten dental chairs
- Phillip Community Health Centre - Ten dental chairs; and
- Tuggeranong Community Health Centre - Five chairs.
- Alexander Maconochie Centre (AMC)
- Canberra Hospital
- Calvary Public Hospital
- Calvary John James Hospital
- Mobile Dental Clinics -

CHSD is a multidisciplinary program and consists of dentists, visiting oral surgeons, oral health therapists, dental therapists, prosthetists, orthodontists, dental assistants, laboratory technicians and administrative staff. CHSD offers a range of dental services to the eligible members of the community for adult & child and youth dental services, this includes denture services and emergency dental.
The services are available Monday to Friday, from 8:30am to 5:00pm at the above listed facilities and Community Health Centres.
Key Responsibilities
Under limited direction of the Business Support Officer and operational leadership from the Site Leader, you will provide dental assisting duties. You will:
- Provide dental assisting duties across Canberra Health Services Dental sites.
- Work across multiple site locations within CHS to ensure the high provision of quality customer service and timely access to service for our clients. Provide support to clinicians that include but not limited to Charting, sterilising/bar code scanning, processing of x-rays.
- Participate in continuing professional development and performance appraisal.
- Participate in organisational meetings, education sessions and quality improvement activities.
- Liaise with parents/carers/guardians and other service providers as required.
- Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

Qualifications
Essential
- Certificate III in Dental assisting or Certificate IV in Dental assisting.
- Be registered under the working for Vulnerable People Act.
- Ability to work across multiple CHS Community Health Centres.
Desirable
- Current Drivers Licence.
- Have an understanding of how the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) indicators align with this role.
Experience
Essential
- Work experience in a similar role as dental assistant.
Desirable
- Experience or knowledge of the CHS Exceptional Care Framework and all other related frameworks.
Prior to commencement
Appointment to this position is conditional on being granted and retaining appropriate clearances:
- Pre-employment National Police Check.
- Current registration issued under the Working with Vulnerable People (Background Checking) Act 2011 is required.
- Comply with Canberra Health Services Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination policy.
- Comply with CHS credentialing and scope of clinical practice requirements for allied health professionals.

CHS is leading the drive to digitally transform health service delivery in Australia through the implementation of a territory wide Digital Health Record. Computer literacy skills are required which are relevant to this role as you will be responsible for completing required documentation and becoming a proficient user of the Digital Health Record and/or other Information Technology systems; once proficient, you will need to remain current with changes, updates, and contingencies.

- Proven experience in dental assisting including infection control practices and procedures.
- Provide high quality customer service as outlined in the ACT Public Service Customer Service Standards.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate, liaise and work effectively as an individual and as part of a clinical team.
- Experience with the use of Microsoft Office Suites including outlook and dental software in relation to assisting with maintaining accurate clinical records including charting.
- Demonstrates understanding of, and adherence to, safety and quality standards, work, health, and safety (WH&S) and the positive patient experience. Displays behaviour consistent with CHS’s values of reliable, progressive, respectful, and kind.
