Position overview

The CHS Arts in Health Curator enhances the healthcare environment in alignment with the CHS Vision of creating exceptional health care together. The Arts in Health Program identifies, sources and manages works of art to ensure that CHS places of treatment, healing and rehabilitation are vibrant, colourful, engaging and therapeutic. In partnership with key stakeholders, the Arts in Health Curator is responsible for building a CHS art collection that is inclusive, respectful of the diverse backgrounds and abilities of health-care consumers, carers, families and friends of the ACT and surrounding region. The Arts in Health Curator is guided by the CHS Vision, Role, Values and policies, including the Arts in Health Policy and Procedures, as well as by Australian and ACT Government policies, reconciliation action plans and national standards.

Key Responsibilities

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  1. Work in partnership with key stakeholders, including consumer representatives, the Canberra Hospital Foundation, the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Consumer Reference Group, CHS staff, artists and ACT arts organisations, to enhance the delivery of health services to the communities of Canberra and surrounding region through the delivery of art across CHS facilities. The CHS art collection will be responsive to specialist needs, building an inclusive sense of community that embraces CHS’ values.
  2. Source potential acquisitions and make recommendations to project specific Art Working Groups and the CHS Arts Advisory Group, through the development and approval of Arts Briefs.
  3. Develop and maintain the CHS art collection in accordance with the Arts in Health Policy and Procedures. This includes, but is not limited to, the development and maintenance of the Art Register, cataloguing, display, conservation and maintenance, de-commissioning, and administration of the CHS art collection. Also, the provision of advice on promotion, cleaning, insurance and security of the CHS art collection.
  4. Prepare papers for consideration by CHS Arts Advisory Group, and work in collaboration with the Secretariat to prepare for meetings and record meeting outcomes.
  5. Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

Competencies

To be successful in this position, it is expected that you will have the following attributes:

  • Liaison and communication skills of a high order, including the capacity and ability to interrogate, negotiate or communicate on behalf of the agency with community representatives in oral and written forms.
  • Have specific subject matter expertise on arts in health, including offering technical and professional advice as required.
  • Under limited direction, undertake high level project work, with accountability and responsibility for outcomes arising from the use or allocation of resources within the constraints or guidelines set by senior executives.
  • Co-ordinate the regular review of the CHS Arts in Health Policies and Procedures with an appreciation of their application in relation to associated CHS policies and operations.
  • Contribute to the high-level planning of buildings and precincts to support the CHS Master Plan vision for the Canberra Hospital to be a world leading, person-centred, accessible, safe, and welcoming Campus.
  • Provide advice on legislation, regulations, corporate objectives, policies, and operations in relation to the arts in health with the capacity to undertake specific or major research, investigations or reviews and prepare associated papers‑and reports.
  • Effectively manage the allocated budget and resources.
  • Represent the Arts in Health Program within CHS to the wider community and nationally, including the Australasian Health Infrastructure Alliance (AHIA) Arts in Health Sub-Group.

Qualifications

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.

  • Knowledge of public gallery/museum practices, including the display of works of art, developing and building collections, knowledge of the Australian visual art market, cataloguing of works of art and the maintenance of accurate records.
  • Demonstrated experience in, and an enthusiasm for, developing the relationship of arts in health.

  1. High level knowledge of the visual art practice and a strong network within the arts community.
  2. Demonstrated personal drive and track record of innovation in the management of art in a public organisation.
  3. Ability to manage competing priorities, including working on multiple projects simultaneously, and organising and prioritising key activities to meet deadlines with limited supervision.
  4. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively as a member of a team and establish productive working relationships with multi-disciplinary teams and Canberra Health Services (CHS) clients.
  5. Demonstrates understanding of, and adherence to, safety and quality standards, Work Health and Safety and the positive patient experience. Displays behaviour consistent with CHS’s values of reliable, progressive, respectful, and kind.
