The Division of Mental Health, Justice Health and Alcohol and Drug Services (MHJHADS) is a clinical division of Canberra Health Services. The Division provides a range of health services directly and through partnerships with community organisations. The services provided range from acute crisis support through to treatment, rehabilitation, recovery and harm minimisation. Services are delivered at several locations, including hospital inpatient and outpatient settings, community health centres, detention centres, and other community settings including people’s homes. These services include (and are not limited to):

  • Rehabilitation and Specialty Services
  • Adult Community Mental Health Services (ACMHS)
  • Adult Acute Mental Health Services (AAMHS)
  • Alcohol & Drug Services (ADS)
  • Child & Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS)
  • Justice Health Services (JHS)

The Clinical Supervisor for Psychology position operates within the Office of the Director of Allied Health (ODAH), MHJHADS, and reports directly to the Assistant Director of Allied Health.

The ODAH provides strategic leadership, governance, and advocacy for Allied Health staff in MHJHADS and works collaboratively with the Directors of Nursing and Service and Transformation to ensure alignment with divisional priorities. This includes contributing to the planning, development, delivery and evaluation of supervision and other clinical education programs and services aligned with workforce needs and strategic objectives.

The successful candidate will provide clinical supervision to Psychologists and other Allied Health staff consistent with Canberra Health Services (CHS), MHJHADS and Psychology Board of Australia policies, procedures and standards. They will have high level knowledge, expertise and skills in the provision of psychology services and will be expected to apply this knowledge both to discipline specific and broader allied health contexts.

In addition, the successful applicant will be expected to demonstrate a well-developed understanding of quality and safety systems and a commitment to meeting standards and managing job demand.

This is a part-time position, working 3 days per week. Two days will be allocated to providing clinical supervision to psychology staff across MHJHADS. The other day will be to assist the MHJHADS Allied Health Clinical Educators with education and training tasks.

While the ODAH is based at the City Community Health Centre, 1 Moore Street, Canberra, the role requires attendance across multiple sites within the division.

Key Responsibilities

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.

Under limited direction of the Assistant Director of Allied Health and MHJHADS Principal Psychologist, the Psychology Clinical Supervisor will:

  • Provide clinical supervision, clinical expertise and clinical leadership to Psychologists (and other allied health clinicians as directed) working in MHJHADS in accordance with the requirements of Psychology Board of Australia Supervision Guidelines and Standards, the MHJHADS Clinical Supervision Procedure and the Canberra Hospital and Health Services Operational Guideline for Clinical Supervision for Allied Health Clinicians.
  • Exercise independent professional judgement in solving problems and managing cases where principles, procedures and techniques require expansion, adaptation or modification.
  • Work closely with the Principal Psychologist, MHJHADS, to ensure an integrated clinical supervision service for Psychologists within MHJHADS, including the dissemination of information about clinical supervision to Psychologists, and supervision and assistance with the Psychology Intern program and the Psychology New Graduate program.
  • Complete clinical supervision records to standards required and meet reporting and data collection requirements. Provide reports to the Principal Psychologist, MHJHADS and the Assistant Director of Allied Health, MHJHADS on overall level of supervision provided and both systemic and individual issues identified through supervision that impact on the safety and quality of care for consumers.
  • Participate in clinical supervision, continuing professional development and education and performance review processes. Actively promote and facilitate research and/or quality projects to support the development of evidence based clinical supervision.
  • Consult and liaise with the MHJHADS Clinical Educators, Psychology Profession Lead and relevant educational institutions in relation to clinical teaching, curriculum development and research relevant to clinical supervision. Contribute to the planning, development, delivery and evaluation of supervision and other clinical education programs and services as directed.
  • Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

Qualifications

Specific qualifications include, but are not limited to, the following.

Essential

  • Be registered or eligible for general registration with Psychology Board of Australia under AHPRA.
  • Hold an Area of Practice Endorsement in Clinical Psychology with the Psychology Board of Australia, under AHPRA.
  • Approved or eligible for approval as a Psychology Board of Australia Supervisor, including as a Registrar Program Principal Supervisor for Clinical Psychology.

Experience

Specific experience include, but are not limited to, the following.

  • Have a minimum of 5 years’ experience post qualification, including clinical experience working in a mental health setting.

  • Undergo a pre-employment National Police Check.

  • Comply with CHS credentialing and scope of clinical practice requirements for allied health professionals.

  1. Proven experience and demonstrated ability to provide individual and group supervision to Psychologists in a variety of settings including those related to mental health, justice health and alcohol and drug services.
  2. Experience providing psychological assessment and intervention for consumers, carers and relevant others within a mental health setting.
  3. Knowledge of clinical supervision models and Psychology Board of Australia Code of Conduct and policies, procedures, guidelines and registration standards related to supervision, continuing professional development, recency of practice and credentialing and scope of clinical practice. Knowledge of current mental health and other relevant legislation and a sound understanding of the National Standards for Mental Health Services.
  4. Demonstrated ability in development of clinical policy, clinical standards and evaluation of clinical education including demonstrated ability to facilitate quality improvement practices, research and education activities within a team.
  5. Demonstrates a commitment to work, health and safety (WH&S) and the positive patient experience and displays behaviour consistent with Canberra Health Service’s values of Reliable, Progressive, Respectful and Kind.
