Position overview

The Allied Health Clinical Education Unit (AHCEU), part of the Division of Allied Health and based at Canberra Hospital, is responsible for delivering high‑quality clinical education and workforce development. This position sits within the AHCEU and reports directly to the Director of Allied Health Clinical Education.

The Allied Health Clinical Educator provides leadership and support for clinical education and supervision across allied health students and staff. The role contributes to the design, facilitation, and promotion of interprofessional education activities and leads allied health workforce development projects as required. The position also holds line‑management responsibility for designated staff within the AHCEU.

This role is suited to an experienced clinician who leads with integrity, demonstrates agility, communicates effectively, collaborates with purpose, and is accountable for achieving quality outcomes. Key areas of practice include:

  • Promoting positive  client outcomes through high‑quality, evidence‑based clinical education and  contribution to research activities.
  • Providing  leadership, training, and mentoring to staff and students within and across  designated clinical areas as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Offering expert  consultation across allied health professions and contributing to  interprofessional education initiatives.
  • Leading key  initiatives that develop, implement, and evaluate innovative education  programs for students, graduates, and staff.

Key Responsibilities

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.

Under limited direction of the Director of Allied Health Clinical Education Coordinator, you will support student and staff education across Allied Health.  You will:

  1. Provide organisation‑wide leadership in clinical education, overseeing the planning, design, delivery, and evaluation of high‑quality teaching and supervision aligned with best practice and supporting interprofessional learning.
  2. Work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders to identify and prioritise education needs, support student placements, influence curriculum development, and strengthen partnerships that enhance clinical teaching and research.
  3. Manage key allied health education portfolios across CHS, including student programs, early‑career pathways, professional transitions, supervision frameworks, and capability and compliance training, while promoting education research and quality improvement.
  4. Contribute to CHS strategic planning, policy development and clinical standards for the allied health workforce, working with the Office of the Executive Director of Allied Health and relevant governance groups to ensure alignment with organisational and professional requirements.
  5. Support workforce capability and continual learning by coordinating high‑quality education initiatives, monitoring performance, and ensuring consistent application of contemporary clinical education practices across CHS.
  6. Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

  • Substantial knowledge of evidence‑based clinical education and adult learning principles, and how they apply across diverse allied health contexts.
  • Ability to coordinate high‑quality student placements across CHS, ensuring effective learning experiences and robust supervision structures.
  • Capability to provide skilled supervision to students and clinicians, using appropriate models that support professional growth.
  • Ability to design, deliver, and evaluate education and foundational skills training, effectively using technology, teaching media, and contemporary learning methods.
  • Strong organisational, teaching and presentation skills, with a flexible, proactive, and adaptive approach to managing competing priorities.
  • Highly effective interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to consult, liaise, and build partnerships that enhance learning, curriculum development, research, and interdisciplinary collaboration.

Qualifications

Specific qualifications include, but are not limited to, the following.

Essential

For Occupational Therapy:

  • Be registered or eligible for registration with Occupational Therapy Board of Australia under AHPRA.
  • Be eligible for professional membership of Occupational Therapy Australia.

For Psychology:

  • Be registered or eligible for general registration with Psychology Board of Australia under AHPRA.

For Physiotherapy:

  • Be registered or eligible for registration with Physiotherapy Board of Australia under AHPRA.

For clinically relevant Allied Health Professions such as Creative Arts Therapy, Exercise Physiology and Speech Pathology:

  • Hold the recognised tertiary qualification for that profession.
  • Professional membership or eligibility for professional membership of the peak body for that profession.
  • Be registered under the ACT Working with Vulnerable People Act 2011 (ACT).

Desirable

  • Post graduate qualifications, or working towards, in education, training and assessment or equivalent.
  • Post graduate qualifications in an allied health clinical practice speciality.
  • Have an understanding of how the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) indicators align with this role.

Experience

Specific experience include, but are not limited to, the following.

Essential

  • Have a minimum of 5 years’ clinical experience post qualification in a health setting.
  • Sound understanding of education and adult learning principles.

Desirable

Please note prior to commencement successful candidates will be required to:

  • Undergo a pre-employment National Police Check.
  • Current registration issued under the Working with Vulnerable People (Background Checking) Act 2011 is required.
  • Comply with Canberra Health Services Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination policy.
  • Comply with CHS credentialing and scope of clinical practice requirements for allied health professionals.

Computer literacy skills are required which are relevant to this role as you will be responsible for completing the required documentation and becoming a proficient user of the Digital Health Record and/or other Information Technology systems; once proficient, you will need to remain current with changes, updates, and contingencies.

  2. Demonstrated high level student supervision skills, including the ability to design and implement innovative student supervision models.
  3. Demonstrated experience in designing, developing, delivering, and evaluating educational programs, including interprofessional and professional specific education, with a strong grasp of adult learning principles.
  4. Demonstrated ability to lead professionally by promoting evidence-based practices including active participation in quality improvement activities, research, and the professional development of team members.
  5. High level communication and collaboration skills within an interprofessional environment, including the demonstrated ability toestablish and maintain relationships with internal and external service providers and stakeholders.
  6. Demonstrated understanding of, and commitment to, safety and quality standards, workplace health and safety (WH&S), and the delivery of a positive patient experience. Exhibits behaviours aligned with Canberra Health Services’ values of reliability, progressiveness, respect, and kindness.
