The Emergency Department at Canberra Hospital provides critical care to over 90,000 patients each year and operates within a fast paced, high volume clinical environment. The Emergency Department Administration Manager plays a key role in supporting the delivery of safe, efficient, and person centred care by ensuring the effective functioning of administrative services that support medical, nursing, and allied health teams.

Reporting directly to the Operations Manager, Emergency Department, the Administration Manager is responsible for the leadership and coordination of administrative staff across a 24/7 service. Under limited direction, the role oversees workforce management, financial and administrative functions, performance monitoring, and access and quality improvement activities. As a member of the Emergency Department’s multidisciplinary leadership team, the Administration Manager works collaboratively with clinical and operational leaders to meet key performance targets, support service priorities, and ensure administrative practices align with organisational objectives and Division of Medicine priorities.

The role is supported through collaboration with the broader network of Administration Managers across the Division of Medicine and contributes to consistent, high quality administrative service delivery across the organisation.

Key Responsibilities

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.

  1. Supervise and provide leadership to a team of 24/7 administrative staff to achieve high quality, effective, person-centred care with the Emergency Department.
  2. Under general direction of the Operations Manager, you are responsible for human recourse management (Management of a 24-7 rotating roster, performance planning and management, training and development, recruitment and staff selection, staff leave management) of Administration staff within the Emergency Department.
  3. Under general direction of the Operations Manager, you are responsible for fiscal matters (accounts payable and receivable, processing of timesheets, approval of overtime, approval of stationery and cash management).
  4. Under general direction of the operations manager, implement quality assurance (QA) and quality improvement (QI) programmes that are relevant to the administration functions of the Emergency Department administration team.
  5. Contributing towards development and implementation of policies, standard operating procedures, and operational manuals
  6. Leading orientation programmes, learning and development and delivering training sessions ion line with organisational requirements for administration staff.
  7. Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

  • Assist in the delivery of projects under the direction of higher classification levels, ensuring alignment with organisational goals.
