NCH Pharmacy sits within the Division of Allied Health, Ambulatory and Palliative Care and comprises a highly functioning and friendly team of approximately 45 staff – pharmacists, technicians and administrative staff. Currently, the department provides clinical pharmacy services using a complete digital health record to various specialty areas including critical care, emergency care, coronary care, stroke/neurology, general medicine, general surgery, palliative care, maternity, mental health, pre-admission clinic, hospital in the home, as well as dispensary and non-sterile manufacturing services. We also offer a pharmacy residency program, and a wide range of teaching opportunities.

The position provides an opportunity for a Pharmacy graduate to obtain provisional pharmacist registration, undertake supervised practice and complete a comprehensive intern training program with the aim of developing the necessary clinical pharmacy knowledge and skills to be able to practice competently as a pharmacist with general registration in the hospital setting.
The Pre-registration Pharmacist is responsible for fulfilling requirements as prescribed by the Pharmacy Board of Australia (PBA), their Intern Training Program Provider, and the North Canberra Hospital (NCH) Pharmacy Department (CPHB). The Pre-registration Pharmacist will be expected to rotate through multiple areas serviced by the NCH and contribute to the quality use of medicines and optimal patient care through the provision of pharmacy services under supervision of a registered Pharmacist.
Key responsibilities
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.
Under general direction from the Clinical Pharmacist – Education, Training and Workforce Development, you will work closely with a team of dedicated and skilled technicians, pharmacists, and other healthcare practitioners, to deliver a safe, efficacious and patient centred pharmacy service across NCH.
Under supervision of a registered Pharmacist you will:
- Provide a clinical pharmacy service following the Advanced Pharmacy Australia Clinical Pharmacy Standards. This includes but is not limited to; admission medication history and reconciliation, review of medication orders to ensure clarity, validity and appropriateness, therapeutic drug monitoring, assessment and ongoing monitoring of medication management, discharge planning and facilitation, participation in clinical decision-making and provision of medicines information to patients and health professionals.
- Dispense individual prescriptions for inpatients, outpatients and patients on discharge including the preparation of non-sterile extemporaneous pharmaceuticals using established principles, techniques and methods.
- Assist with the receipt, storage and distribution of pharmaceuticals and maintain accurate records in the process.
- Participate in the department’s quality improvement projects, health promotion activities, educational programs, and research activities.
- Promote at every opportunity, quality use of medicines principles, ensuring correct prescribing, and compliance with Drugs and Therapeutics Committee endorsed prescribing restrictions and protocols.
- Participate in the NCH pre-registration training program, CHS Allied Health Interprofessional Graduate Program and other designated educational activities such as the attendance and contribution to clinical pharmacist meetings as rostered.
- Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.
- Participate in weekend and after-hours work as needed according to the departmental roster.

Position Requirements / Qualifications
Mandatory
- Relevant Tertiary Qualification in Pharmacy.
- Registered or eligible for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) as a provisional pharmacist.
- Eligible to enrol in an Intern Training Program accredited by the Australian Pharmacy Council.
- CHS is leading the drive to digitally transform health service delivery in Australia through the implementation of a territory wide Digital Health Record. Computer literacy skills are required which are relevant to this role as you will be responsible for completing required documentation and becoming a proficient user of the Digital Health Record and/or other Information Technology systems; once proficient, you will need to remain current with changes, updates and contingencies.

- Have an understanding of how the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) indicators align with this role.

What you Require (Key Selection Criteria)
These are the key selection criteria for how you will be assessed in conjunction with your resumé and experience.
- Knowledge of pharmacology and pharmacotherapy (consistent with undergraduate training) and an understanding of clinical pharmacy activities (consistent with the AdPha Clinical Pharmacy Standards) and an ability to apply this to practical situations.
- Well-developed interpersonal, teamwork and communication skills with the ability to effectively interact with all levels of hospital staff, patients and carers.
- Demonstrated ability to problem solve, prioritise and manage workload demands, meet deadlines and complete duties (including ability to be self-directed and work independently within scope of practice and seek assistance when required.
- Engagement in the profession of pharmacy and a commitment to continuous development and extension as a health professional.
