Our Vascular Surgery Outpatient Service provides assessment and treatment for conditions involving blood vessels, including arteries and veins.

About this service

Our vascular surgeons have access to both open (surgery) and endovascular (minimally invasive) techniques to diagnose and treat arterial and venous diseases.

Our vascular surgeons are involved in wound/ulcer management and manage diabetic foot complications. We do this with the assistance of other specialists such as endocrinologists and podiatrists through the High-Risk Foot Clinic.

Who we care for

We see both outpatients and inpatients who are referred by their treating team. Services are accessed through referrals from a General Practitioner/specialist, Canberra Hospital Emergency Department or a Canberra Hospital ward after admission.

How to access this service

Your General Practitioner or medical practitioner will organise for you to access this service.

In some cases, you will be referred to us by our Emergency Department or treating team in Canberra Hospital.

What to expect

There is high demand for public surgical outpatient services.

We assess all referrals against clinical criteria which is available for referring medical officers. If your condition meets this criteria, you will be offered an appointment.

We encourage you to talk to your General Practitioner about the most appropriate care for your condition.

We aim to triage your referral within five days of receiving it.

We will send you a letter to confirm you are on the waiting list, and we will contact you when an appointment is available.

What to bring to your appointment

  • Medicare card
  • Any letters or correspondence from your GP
  • Private health insurance card (if applicable/if you want to use it)
