The Respiratory Physiotherapy Outpatient service looks after people with long term respiratory/lung conditions.

About this service

We aim to help people who have long term respiratory/lung conditions, particularly those who have difficulty coughing up phlegm. Many of our patients have conditions such as Bronchiectasis or recurrent chest infections.

We can teach you breathing exercises to help clear your airways and keep your lungs healthy.

This service is not designed for long term management. We aim to set you up so that you can manage your lung health on your own.

Who we care for

Our services are available for adult patients who have been diagnosed with a chronic lung condition and are being managed by a Respiratory Physician/Specialist. If you have been in hospital, your treating physiotherapist may also refer you.

This service is free if you have a Medicare card.

How to access this service

Your Respiratory Physician/Specialist will organise for you to access this service.

You may also be referred by your GP, hospital physiotherapist, or Respiratory Nurse Practitioner.

Once we receive your referral we will contact you to organise an appointment.

What to expect

We aim to provide you with the tools and knowledge to manage your condition independently in the long term.

During your appointment you can expect:

  • To gain an understanding of your condition and your symptoms by conducting a thorough assessment.
  • To better understand your condition and its management.
  • To receive advice on airway clearance techniques. You may be offered trials of airway clearance devices to see what works for you.
  • To receive advice about exercise that can help with symptom management and promote health.
  • Ongoing monitoring and review as needed.

What to bring to your appointment

  • Medicare card
  • Any letters or correspondence from your GP
  • Health Care Card and/or concession card (if you have one)
  • List of medicines you are currently taking (or the boxes), including medicines you have bought without a prescription, such as herbal supplements and vitamins
