Our Social Work and Psychology service offers help with the emotional and behavioral impacts associated with your medical condition at the time of your admission to North Canberra Hospital.
About this service
Social Work also involves working with you to help you achieve goals and ensure safe discharge from hospital back into the community. Social work is carried out in collaboration with patients and families as well as Doctors, Nurses and other Allied Health Professionals.
If you have spent a long time in hospital you may need to consider:
- Accessing services that may not previously have been required
- Making difficult decisions regarding health care
- Confirming future plans.
At North Canberra Hospital, Social Workers help you with:
- Aged care placements
- Adjusting to illness
- Bereavement counselling
- Community care placements
- Coordinating family meetings
- Discharge planning
- Information and education
- Post-surgery services
- Short term counselling
- Transport options.

We care for people admitted to North Canberra Hospital.
We also have a Social Work Inpatient Service for people admitted to Canberra Hospital.

What to expect
Working as a member of your care team, the Social Work and Psychology service will formulate with you a care plan to address your social and emotional well-being, addressing difficulties including:
- Adjustment issues arising from changed life circumstances
- Anxiety problems
- Anger issues
- Depression and other mood disorders
- Grief and bereavement issues
- Smoking, alcohol and illegal drug use.
We’re available Monday to Friday, 8.30am – 4.30pm, and weekends via an on-call system. You can call us on (02) 6201 6111.
