The High Risk Breast Cancer Clinics provides specialised screening and support for people at high risk of breast cancer.

About this service

We provide early monitoring for asymptomatic women at risk who are more likely to develop breast cancer.

Who we care for

We care for asymptomatic patients under 60 years of age who meet one of the below criteria:

  • a known high risk genetic mutation present in the patient or a first degree relative
  • a lifetime risk estimation >30% or 10 year absolute risk estimation >5% using a validated risk algorithm (iPrevent Breast Cancer Risk Assessment online tool recommended)
  • BOTH a first or second degree relative with breast cancer at 45 years or younger AND another first/second degree relative on the same side of the family with bone or soft tissue sarcoma at 45 years or younger.
  • a personal history of mantle radiation therapy (Hodgkin lymphoma treatment)
  • a personal history of breast cancer before the age of 50 years, and no longer under routine specialist surveillance.

How to access this service

You need a referral to access this service. You can get a referral from your GP or a specialist.

What to expect

Once we receive your referral, one of our breast surgeons will triage it.

Next, we'll contact you to offer you an appointment.

On the day of the appointment, please check in at the Specialist Outpatient Clinic reception.

What to bring to your appointment

  • Medicare card
  • Veterans Affairs card (if you have one)
  • Medicines you need to take while you are here
  • List of medicines you are currently taking (or the boxes), including medicines you have bought without a prescription, such as herbal supplements and vitamins
  • Previous x-ray films, scans, ultrasounds or any other test results or reports.

Information for referrers

Referrals are made via Healthlink smartform to NCH General Surgery.

Referrals are triaged by our Breast Surgeons to ensure patients meet the referral criteria and we have copies of relevant test results.
