Our Genetic Service talks to people about medical problems that may be caused by genes.

About this service

The ACT Genetic Service provides specialist prenatal, childhood and adult genetic counselling for people with a personal or family history of a genetic condition or suspected genetic condition.

Genetic counsellors can talk to you about the chance that you, your family members or future children will be affected by a genetic disorder. We can also provide you with information about your genetic condition and how it may affect your life.

Who we care for

You will be able to access our Genetic Service after we receive a referral from your doctor.

We offer Genetic Services for free if you have a Medicare Card or an Asylum Seeker Card.

How to access this service

Your doctor will organise for you to access this service.

What to expect

After we receive your referral, we will offer you an appointment based on our priority criteria.

  • other referrals triaged as urgent.

Category 2 referrals:

  • children.

Category 3 referrals:

  • adults
  • other issues that do not meet the criteria for Category 1 & 2 referrals.

You will receive a telephone call to confirm your appointment time and any special preparations that might be needed.
