About this service
Endoscopy is a general term covering any procedure that involves introducing an instrument to examine internal parts of the body.
Our specialist team carries out the following endoscopic procedures:
- Colonoscopy (examination of the large bowel)
- Gastroscopy (examination of the stomach).
Endoscopy is also available at Canberra Hospital through the Gastroenterology and Hepatology Unit.

We care for people referred by their GP or specialist.
How to access this service
Your GP or specialist will initiate your endoscopy arrangements with our Surgical Bookings Team.

What to expect
Endoscopy is carried out under sedation which means you won’t be able to drive home after your procedure.
You’ll receive instruction from your GP and your Gastroenterologist about preparing for your endoscopy. Please follow these instructions carefully because if you are not adequately prepared, your procedure may be postponed.
What to bring to your appointment
- Medicare card
- Any letters or correspondence from your GP
- Medicines you need to take while you are here
- List of medicines you are currently taking (or the boxes), including medicines you have brought without a prescription, such as herbal supplements and vitamins
- Previous x-ray films, scans, ultrasounds or any other test results or reports
