The Custodial Health team provide comprehensive primary and mental health care services to detainees in custody within the Alexander Maconochie Centre (AMC) and, to young people at Bimberi Youth Justice Centre (BYJC).
We also have a dedicated Custodial Mental Health service.
About this service
The Custodial Health team provide for the day to day and ongoing health needs for all people in custody at the Alexander Maconochie Centre and Bimberi. This includes providing medical and nursing clinics, medication management and the monitoring and care required for acute and chronic diseases and health conditions. The Custodial Health team also provide urgent medical care to patients who have acute injuries or illnesses.
The Custodial Health team provides care 7 days per week and offer several different services including:
- General Practitioner consultations.
- Custodial Primary Health – provide day to day management of acute and chronic health conditions including monitoring, observation, treatment and medication management.
- Population Health – provide coordination of care for people with chronic health conditions.
- Alcohol & Other Drug – provide specialist Alcohol & Other Drug nursing services including the management and oversight of the Opioid Replacement Therapy program.
We also facilitate access to the following services provided through Canberra Health Services and other providers:
- Dental services
- Optometry services
The Custodial Health team also supports all detainees & young people with access to specialist services via Canberra Health Services including access to medical imaging, pathology services, outpatient specialist services and access to inpatient services where required.

We care for all detainees in custody within the Alexander Maconochie Centre and young people at Bimberi.
How to access this service
Detainees within the Alexander Maconochie Centre can speak with a nurse or submit a Health Access Request form outlining their requirement to see our team.
Young people at Bimberi Youth Justice Centre can ask to speak to the nurse.
What to expect
We complete a health assessment for all detainees and young people when they enter the AMC and BYJC. This happens within 24 hours of entry to the relevant centre.
We make referrals to the appropriate services as required based on the urgency of the clinical presentation of each client.
