We look after people who have difficulty with hearing or need hearing assessments.

About this service

We assess hearing for adults and children who are under the care of a doctor at Canberra Health Services or North Canberra Hospital.

We see people who are admitted to Canberra Hospital (‘inpatients’) or people who attend hospital clinics (‘outpatients’).

All our services are free if you have a Medicare card.

Who we care for

We work with adults and children who have:

  • early signs of hearing difficulties at birth
  • hearing impairments related to trauma or injury
  • children being looked after by our Ear, Nose and Throat specialists
  • people taking medications which might affect their hearing.

How to access this service

You need a referral from a specialist doctor at Canberra Health Services or North Canberra Hospital to access this service. Referrals can be emailed to audiology@act.gov.au

We do not accept referrals from GPs or self-referrals. If you have one of these referrals you will need to see a community audiology provider.

We will re-direct GP or self-referrals to a community audiologist.

If you or your doctor need to contact us, you can call on (02) 5124 2230 or email us at audiology@act.gov.au

All of our services are by appointment only.

What to expect

If you’re an inpatient, we aim to see you as soon as we can.

If you’re an outpatient, we will put you on a waiting list and contact you when an appointment is available in our outpatient clinics. We prioritise our waiting lists according to how urgent the referrals are.

What to bring to your appointment

  • Medicare card
  • Any letters or correspondence from your GP
  • Health Care Card and/or concession card (if you have one)
  • Private health insurance card (if applicable/if you want to use it)
