We provide intensive follow up support to eligible children or young people under the age of 18 who have been discharged from Canberra Hospital, have a mental health vulnerability and are case managed by Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) Community Teams.

About this service

Our Adolescent Intensive Home Treatment Team is staffed by a range of professionals including mental health nurses, psychologists, occupational therapists, social workers, and medical officers.

We provide education, as well as consultancy and collaboration with other services who work with children and youth.

We provide short-term (2-4 weeks) follow-up care for eligible young people who have been:

  • discharged from the Canberra Hospital Emergency Department, or
  • discharged from an inpatient unit, and
  • are not engaged with mental health services.

We take referrals from the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service Hospital Liaison Team and the inpatient units.

We are available between 8:30am and 5:00pm, seven days a week.

What to expect

Our team liaises with all of the wards to ensure all children and young people who are going to be discharged are referred to the team prior to discharge.

One of our team members will be introduced to you, or your child or young person, prior to discharge from hospital.

We will then proactively follow up with you or your child, face to face for 2 to 4 weeks.

We can see you at your family home, or you will be offered appointments in the community; your family will decide on the venue. It could be a neutral setting such as a park, café, another Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service venue or health centre.

If the child or young person requires further care from the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service, we will refer them to one of our community teams or connect you with your existing team.

Our team does not provide assessments for Eating Disorders, ADHD/ADD or Autism Spectrum Disorders.
