Weekdays 6:00pm to 7:00pm

If you arrive between 6:00pm and 7:00pm see the instructions below under weekends and public holidays.

X-rays are not available at Canberra Hospital after 7pm for Walk-in Centre referrals. If you need an x-ray after 7pm the walk-in centre staff will inform you of your options.

Weekends and Public Holidays 8:00am – 7:00pm

Go to the Canberra Hospital Emergency Department Waiting Room and follow these instructions:

  • Do NOT go to the Emergency Department triage desk or register with the Triage Nurse.
  • Take a seat in the Emergency Department waiting room and phone the number below. If you do not have a phone with you, ask the Emergency Department clerk at Emergency Reception to call Medical Imaging for you.
  • The radiographer from Medical Imaging will answer the phone. Please note, the radiographer may be with a patient taking x-rays and not able to answer the phone immediately. You may need to wait 5 minutes then call again.

When your call is answered:

  • Let the radiographer know you have been sent by the Walk-in Centre and are waiting in the Canberra Hospital Emergency Department Waiting room.
  • The radiographer will ask for your medical record number (MRN) which is at the top of this sheet.
  • The radiographer will collect you from the Emergency Department waiting room as soon as they are able to take your x-ray.

There are limited radiographers on duty after-hours. Please be mindful that the radiographer may not be able to do your x-ray immediately. You will be informed if there will be a long wait for your x-ray.

After your x-ray

  • You can go home, you do not need to return to Emergency Department.
  • When we order your x-ray, we will tell you when to return for your results and follow-up treatment. This is usually 24 hours after you have the x-ray.
  • All Walk-in Centres can access your results once they are ready, this can take up to 24 hours.
  • Please go to your nearest Emergency Department if you have any concerns while waiting for your results.
  • Please DO NOT phone the Walk-in Centres or Canberra Hospital Medical Imaging for your results.

**Costs will apply to patients who do not have a Medicare card**.
