Why am I having this test?

Your doctor has requested this test to assess the health of your bladder and urinary tract. It may be requested as a fresh single specimen or a series of 3 fresh specimens collected on different days.

What do I need to do?

You will need urine collection containers. If you were not given these by your doctor or clinic, you can pick them up for free from one of our collection centres (Do not use any other containers other than one given to you by your doctor or ACT Pathology).

Do not collect the urine for testing that you pass when you first get up in the morning as these specimens are not suitable. For this test to be as accurate as possible a mid-morning specimen collected after you have been moving around and have increased your fluid intake is preferred. 2 to 3 hours after you wake, please do the following:

• Start passing urine into the toilet.
• Collect a specimen of urine mid-stream into the container you have been given until at least half the container has been filled.
• Complete emptying your bladder into the toilet.

Once you have collected the specimen, make sure that the lid is screwed on firmly and the container is labelled with your Name, Date of birth, date and time of collection and postcode.

How Do I Collect for a series over 3 Days?

• You will need 3 different urine collection containers.
• Collect a mid-stream urine at mid-morning (as above) on 3 different days.
• Specimens need to be refrigerated immediately after collection.

Bringing your specimen/s to ACT Pathology

You have two choices when brining your specimens into an ACT Pathology collection centre listed below:

• You can deliver each specimen to an ACT Pathology collection centre on the day you have collected it or
• You can deliver all three specimens, collected on different days, after you have collected your final sample.
