Mid-stream urine collection
Your doctor has asked you to do a mid-stream urine collection for testing.
What do I need to do?
If you have not been given a sterile urine container, you can pick up a free one from an ACT pathology collection centre. Do not use any other containers other than the one issued by your doctor or pathology. If the container is broken or if you have accidentally touched the inside surface, please ask for a new one.
Collecting the sample
Before you begin collecting the sample, clearly label your container with your full name, date of birth, and the time and date of collection. For the best results, the urine must be collected mid-stream. To collect your mid-stream sample, follow the instructions below:
- wash your hands thoroughly before collecting the sample
- collect a midstream urine sample only. Firstly, pass a small amount of urine into the toilet and then start collecting your urine into the container—do not touch the inside of the container. You do not have to fill the container to the brim
- finish emptying your bladder into the toilet
- once you have collected the sample, screw the lid on tightly.
Delivery of the sample
Please deliver your sample to one of the ACT pathology collection centres listed on the next page for testing as soon as possible.
If you cannot deliver your sample to a collection centre within an hour of collection, please refrigerate the sample—do not freeze it.
