You are receiving chemotherapy through a Baxter Infusor/Infusion Pump. This chemotherapy may sometimes cause:

• chest pain or tightness
• shortness of breath
• an abnormal heartbeat.

Managing your symptoms

If you experience any of the above symptoms you should:

• clamp your central line to stop the chemotherapy (see pictures on the next page)
• go to your nearest hospital emergency department immediately.

If you have these symptoms, it may be serious. You should get immediate medical attention. To stop you from having more chemotherapy which will make your symptoms worse, you will need to clamp your central line immediately.

Our nurses will show you in detail how to clamp your central line before you go home with your first chemotherapy pump, and practice this with you as well.

What you need to do if you experience any other problems

Sometimes your central line moves out of place or leaks blood or fluid into your dressing. If this happens, you need to:

• clamp your central line to stop the chemotherapy (see pictures on the next page)
• contact Oncology Outpatients on (02) 5124 8471 between 8.30am and 5pm, Monday to Friday or go to your nearest hospital emergency department if it is outside of those hours.

You will be provided with a purple cytotoxic bin for the safe disposal of your infusion/infusor pump. Your infusion/infusor pump must be disposed of into this purple cytotoxic bin.
