Family Respite Lounge
Located on level 4, Building 5, Canberra Hospital
If you have a family member or someone you are caring for in the Emergency Department, Intensive Care Unit or having surgery, we have a dedicated lounge you can use for up to 24 hours while you wait.
It is a warm, safe and calm place, with lots of amenities to help you feel more comfortable while you wait at the hospital.
You will be supported by a social worker while you are staying in the lounge. We can also connect you with an Aboriginal Liaison Officer and/or Spiritual Support Services if you need.
This is a dedicated place where you can:
Eat and drink
There are kitchenette facilities, with a microwave and hot water. As well as supplies to make tea and coffee. There is a large dining table so you can eat meals comfortably whilst using the space. There are also 2 vending machines in the room.
Relax
The lounge includes a comfortable couch overlooking a courtyard. There is also a quiet space available with a recliner chair for respite. For children, there is a play table and interactive wall. There is also a mobile phone charging station and free Wi-Fi. To access the Wi-Fi on your smart phone, laptop or tablet choose the network name HEALTHfree. There no password.
Please note this space does not have sleeping facilities.
Shower and use bathroom facilities
There is a toilet and shower in the room with towels available to use. There are storage lockers for you to temporarily store your belongings.
Meet in a quiet space
The lounge has a private space you can use to meet with the treating team.
How to access the lounge:
Nursing staff or a social worker will arrange to give you access to the lounge if you are eligible.
They will show you the space and how to use it. They will give you a pass which will give you access for up to 24 hours.
They will run you through what you need to do to keep it a clean, safe and comfortable shared space.
You will be visited by our social work team, who will be there to support you during your stay, during business hours.
Finding the Family Respite Lounge:
The lounge is located on level 4 in Building 5 at the Canberra Hospital.
- Take the public lifts to level 4.
- Exit right, as you get out of the lift.
- Take your first left up the corridor.
- The Family Respite Lounge will be on your right.
