Canberra Health Services sites are smoke free
All Canberra Health Services’ hospitals and health care centres are smoke, vapour and vape-free.
Everyone should breathe fresh air and enjoy a safe, healthy and comfortable environment, especially at our places of healing and care.
Smoking, including vaping and using e-cigarettes, is not permitted inside or outside our health sites at any time.
It is never too late to quit smoking or vaping. We are here to help manage your smoking or vaping with medications.
A few weeks before your hospital appointment or stay you should:
- talk with your GP or pharmacist about stopping smoking or vaping while you stay in hospital
- talk with a trained Quitline counsellor for information and a Quit Pack.
This will help to reduce your length of stay in hospital and improve your recovery time.
There are free services available to help you quit. You can call:
- Quitline 13 78 48 or text ‘Callback’
- No More Boondah (02) 6284 6222 (for Aboriginal and or Torres Strait Islander people)
- ACT Cancer Council (02) 6257 9999
You can also download a quit app to your phone:
- MyQuitBuddy
- I Can Quit
While you’re staying in hospital, we can give you the support and understanding to help you give up smoking or vaping for the short term with:
- information and advice
- Nicotine Replacement Therapy (such as patches, gum, lozenges or inhalers)
- referrals to other supports.
