Breast cancer facts

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women.

Having a mammogram can find breast cancer early – before you feel or notice it.

Having a FREE breast screening mammogram helps you stay strong and healthy – for yourself and your mob.

Can I have a breast screening mammogram?

You can have a FREE breast screening mammogram if you are aged 40 years and over.

How often should I have a breast screening mammogram?

Every two years. Remember, once is not enough.

Your doctor will tell you if you need to be screened more often.

What are breast screening mammograms?

It is a mammogram (X-Ray) to check women’s breasts for early signs of breast cancer.

A very small amount of radiation is used.

What happens during the breast screening?

Your breast is compressed between two plates for a short time to get a clear picture. Two x-rays are taken of each breast.

It can find cancers as small as a grain of rice.

The appointment only takes 20 minutes.

It only takes 20 minutes every 2 years for peace of mind

What should I wear to my appointment?

Wear a two-piece outfit (pants and t-shirt).

At the appointment you will need to remove your top and bra.

On the day of your breast screening mammogram, do not use talcum powder or deodorant.

How do I make an appointment?

Call 13 20 50 or talk to your health care worker.

Where can I get a FREE breast screening mammogram?

BreastScreen ACT has three sites:

• Canberra City Community Health Centre
• Phillip Community Health Centre
• Belconnen Community Health Centre

There is wheelchair access at all clinics.

What else can I do?

Be aware of what is normal for your breasts. Look at and feel your breasts regularly.

See your doctor straight away if you notice any changes.

Beautiful Shawl Project

A free shawl will be given to you at your appointment to wear during the screening mammogram.

The shawls represent women from all different nations coming together with an unbroken connection sharing wisdom, strength, courage, and determination.
